hey guys,
the momentus xt sale at newegg ends today...
i'd really, REALLY, like to get more HD space on my laptop, it's a dv7 with the intel ssd...
i'm thinking i'd cover my cost of the momentus xt if i sold my intel ssd...
what do you guys think?
the momentus xt is suppose to have similar boot up times and for things that i use most often, should still be pretty fast..
thoughts?
750GB Seagate Momentus XT Review: The Latest and Greatest Hybrid Drive

Don't be an idiot. I have an Intel SSD in my laptop and the Kingston Hyperx 240 in my desktop. I came from a VELOCIRAPTOR, and would never go back. Any mechanical or hybrid will be A LOT SLOWER. I honestly don't notice the speed difference in my two SSDs (though kingston should be twice as fast), but a mechanical hard drive is a freaking snail. If you must, sell the SSD and get a bigger SSD, even a cheap SSD will kill that Momentus. Buy a $75 1T-2T external hard drive for backups.

the momentus drives are supposed to be quite a bit faster than hard drives given time to "sink in"
if you really need the disk space then go for it but keep in mind your laptop has two bays for hard drives so you would be better off getting just a cheap 2.5" hard drive and installing it for storage so you wouldn't have to reinstall windows or do any ghosting business -
Keep the SSD. Buy a 1TB hard drive to replace your 500GB. The XT drives are nice, but no comparison to a true SSD. XT drives are a stop gap for machines with a single hard drive bay that want SSD performance for the basic stuff like boot up and essential apps, but it's only for "learned" reads. Writes are still as slow as to a regular HDD since the SSD NAND is a read-only cache.

Even better would be to keep your current system the way it is and get a 2-3tb external usb3.0 hd. Keep your eyes open for deals, I got a 3tb usb 3.0 for $100 at best buy of all places on BF, but it was normally only $160. Even the higher price isn't bad by today's standards.
And I agree that you should under no circumstances at all remove that intel ssd. Unless you want to sell it. to me. -
haha thanks for setting me straight guys...i'm going to can the switching of the ssd idea...
i do have a large external hd that i use for backups...i don't want to have to get a large hd for my family pics and vids and files, and then ANOTHER external HD to back all that up...i donno, i know it's just an extra step that i'd have to do, but i'd rather not...1tb like what htwingnut mentioned would be perfect and last me another couple of years
best part about this? i don't have to reinstall everything...that'd be several EXTRA hours of pain right there -

And you can get a usb 3.0 3tb drive for $150 if you look around.
sell my intel 160gb ssd and buy momentus XT 750gb?
