this was while running 3Dmark vantage. i haven't done any overclocking or anything. The max scores are what really scare me, but the idle scores are crazy too. i'm not used to running this kind of hardware on a notebook, so is it normal to have temps like this? i'm used to my CPU getting to 43C max on full load

Those are a little high. Idle should be between 45-55.

Try putting something on the bottom of your laptop to lift of the back about half an inch, and also, make sure you are using it on a hard flat surface.

I've never went above 90, but it is fine for the i-series. They can even handle over 100. The max operating temperature on the 6770m is 95. Under load I usually max out at 85-88 on the cores, and rarely go over 80 on the GPU.

I'm sure it's probably not the best thing for longevity, but what are you going to do? Some people have claimed that the right external cooler can shave off up to 10 degrees from the max, but most reviews seem to show only a 1-3 degree improvement. I'm currently debating whether to try one out, or just not bother with it.

    Hey Kahn,

I would say it's a completely warranted purchase, I'm confident it would definitely add to the life of your laptop in the long run. The cooler master u2 is the one that seems to be the most popular one, and it's only $23 on Amazon..i'd say it's easily worth it.

just did that. hottest core is now at 55.

i am not on a flat surface, it is actually on my bed. does it make that much of a difference?

Those are a little high but it seems like all processors run in the 80s/90s nowadays. But using it on a surface like a bed is bad because it blocks the airflow.

Did you change the HP Coolsense to max performance as well?

If you are doing anything intensive like benchmarking, video editing and compression, CAD, or gaming, I would strongly advise not to do it on your bed.

Thanks for the input. The U2 is the one I had been considering as well. I'll probably just get it and see how it goes. It's $20 including shipping from Microcenter. Only $15 if you live by a store and can pick it up.

the only options i see are:
    coolest mode
    performance optimized mode
    quietest mode

btw, is putting it on coolest mode a battery killer? right now the battery indicator shows 100% but only 2hr 39min

Yehp, the coolest mode will drain the battery because the fans will be running much more often.

Never put a laptop on a bed or blanket like surface, it blocks the airflow and will turn any laptop into an oven.

If you use it on a bed put it in your lap, or your stomach propped with your legs while laying back, or lay a book or magazine underneath it while actually on the bed for airflow.
