I recentley purchased a Compaq Presario CQ61 from Comet and was surprised that there was no instruction book included. It has Windows 7 installed but I am having problems finding out the features of the program,is there a booklet available to download? also it takes 3 minutes to boot up fully which I think is rather slow! how can I speed it up? Thanks for any help anyone can give me

It sounds like you have one really bad case of a bloated PC.

    First thing you can do...

Download a program called PC Decrapifier. This is a godsend program that will get rid of your factory installed bloatware.

    Download | The PC Decrapifier

    Secondly,

Press "Start." Type in "msconfig." Hit Enter. A little window should pop up.

Click on the "Startup" tab. You should see a moderately long list of programs that start with Windows.

You can go through and un-check the programs that are not essential for the initial booting of Windows.

Some of those programs could be your Word processor, chat programs, MSN, Adobe updates, etc. (You can reply with your list of checked programs...if unsure.)

Once done, hit "Ok" and it should prompt a reboot. (should reboot fairly quickly)

Let me know how it goes!

PC's from Comet/PC World/Curry's etc do tend to have a lot of software you don't need. As has been mentioned, check your startup programs. This is the number one main cause of a PC being slow to startup or log on.

You can do this with msconfig, or you could use a handy tool I recommend downloading called CCleaner. Once you've got it, hit the tools tab then startup then have a look at all the programs you have to run when you boot. If it's something you don't need then disable it. You should also uninstall any programs you don't need too.

Also out of interest since it came from Comet, did you recieve a free trial of Norton? If so then I recommend swiching to a different anti-virus since Norton is very heavy on system resources, something you don't want especially on lower spec machines.
