slow dvd burner on dv2000t?

Hi,

I have a dv2000t and recently burned some avi files onto a dvd-r (filled the 4.6 gb disk). Using the basic Roxio software that came with the laptop, burn speed was only at around 1.75x or so the whole time (took nearly 30 minutes). Is this normal? I've never burned dvds before and am wondering if the dvd-rw drive is just really slow. The device manager says I have a mat****a dvd-ram.

edit: should also mention that the files I am burning are on another computer on my home network (connected with wireless) - don't know
how that affects things.

also, it's a new system with vista, core 2 duo t7200, 2 gigs ram, so that's why i am confused

 

I would say it's the network slowing you down- burning files from another location, even on direct cable connection, will be slow since your computer has to cache (store parts of the file locally) the file(s) by transferring them over the network (at a speed slower than your burner's writing speed). Wireless is much slower during file transfers and that will impact your burn speed as well.

 

Yes, I would agree I have the same dvd-burner in my dv6000t notebook, and it usually takes 4 minutes max to burn an entire DVD-Video with the files on my hard drive.

i copied the files to my hard drive and got max 4x burn speed - still slow i think. i'm kind of concerned about this

 

Maybe it's the program you are using, I highly recommend Nero 7 Ultra it burns a LOT faster with it's built in Ultra-Buffer maybe thats why it burns so quick for me...

 

wireless networks arent the fastest out there and 4gb of data being transferred over to your laptop will take quite some time even at the full 54mbps. it's definitely your wireless network. next time move the files to your laptop first then burn and you will see it going much faster.

 

yea i'm thinking it's just the software, moving the files to the hard drive reduced burn time to maybe 10-15 minutes. i just hope it's nothing with my dvd-rw drive, which i don't think is the case.

 

if u were burning the files directly from a PC on the network, not moving them over first then your burner has nothing to do with this. in fact if ur burner was slow then it wudve taken longer.

 

What program are you using to burn the DVDs
