Browsing the Internet I would sometimes think I noticed some light fluctuations on the left side of the screen, a static area of about 1 inch wide by two inches high. I didn't know if my eyes were playing tricks on me or what.

I came home and my laptop was in sleep mode, so it was powered, but the screen was fully blacked out- ALMOST. That area I thought I noticed changing, was highlighted with a faint lightness. It is hard to describe, but while the entire screen is pitch black, there is a small area that is slightly lit. I first thought it was a smudge or reflection from the lcd buttons, but neither. I also think it gets brighter/softer.

It's almost impossible to notice while in use, but I am incredibly anal when it comes to this stuff and knowing it is there will drive me crazy. Is there some underlying issue I am not sure about or that is prevalent in LED backlit displays? Is this reason enough to return or exchange it to HP?

First I notice the hollow keyboard, now this :( You'd think after spending over $1300 on a laptop it wouldn't have these weird quirks.

    edit
I just realized this spot is about directly opposite to where the HP logo led on the lid is. because the LED backlit display is so thin, do you think it is that hp logo led that is affecting it?

You can check the display by setting no back ground, solid white, then right click on Desktop-->Arrange Icons By-->uncheck Show Desktop Icons .

If you see dark shadow on the display, the LCD is defective.

yeah I don't notice anything. I am starting to be convinced it is due to the HP logo. It would explain why I see it when the display turns off due to inactivity, but when the actual laptop goes into sleep/hibernate and all the LEDs turn off, then it disappears.

I feel like I'm blinding myself staring so hard at this spot !
