I hear the same thing on my dv2700t. I heard the sound coming from directly to the left of the touchpad, right where the HD is. It doesn't do it all the time, but I have heard it; you are not crazy.

I'm pretty computer savvy, and I have deduced that is the hard drive squeaking. Now, hard drives don't normally squeak, but that's not to say that they can't. I'm going to keep an eye on it, you should to.

If it's an electronic beep, I can't see how a hard drive would be causing it?

same here. haven´t experienced this clicking before, but since about one week i´m hearing this loud clicking noise coming from the area where the hdd is.

it´s not doing that very often, but like 2-3 times per hour. strange thing, i´ve never heard it before, but i guess it must have started when i disabled my swap file.

Yeah, I guess it could be more of a click than a beep. But more so a "squeaky clicky" noise....

Maybe if someone just recorded the sound, hahahaha.

The sound actually is from a MODEM. Try to reinstall or update the modem driver.

If its the left of the touch pad doesn't that mean its the hard drive? I had a drive in really bad shape and I just wanted to end its misery so I whacked it while it was running and it was like a eek sound. Lets hope its the modem, wild modems are far better than crashing hard drives.

Yeah, the left of the touchpad is the hard drive. I don't think the hard drives are crashing, just getting closer to dying each time.

See, now this is only getting me more worried. The sound is becomming more frequent and quite possibly louder. It sounds like the read head is parking itself or something. I'm going to run Spinrite on the drive and see if I can come up with anything. I'll keep this thread updated I guess, because this very well could be normal operation for these Hitachi 160GB drives. Which, btw, is what I have. If everyone else who is going to chime in on the same sound, please post your hard drive, that may help find some commonality to the problem.

finally i found the culprit behind the beep sound :) .....in my case its a harddisk ....."It is saying to replace the hard drive because bad sectors are starting to show up, most likely caused by the drive heads not working correctly and hitting the disk (thus damaging areas). Sure, it will work fine...for a while. And you'll slowly lose your data over time as the bits get damaged.""
inorder to chk urs HDD simply run "harddisk self test" frm bios...u can access it by pressing f10 key at the start of laptop....run that test n it will shw u that HDD need to be replaced(showed in my case)......try ur luck guys....

Upon hearing the other user talk about a bad hard drive, I also ran the self-check. It passed with a 00 code, which means no problems on both the quick and the extended tests. I will still run spinrite later on in the next few days to see what it turns up.

Yeah sounds like its your HDD, if they loose the lube in between the disks theres alot of friction that can cause a squealing noise.

So that begs the question, is this something we should be worried about? I mean, if it looses a little lube (and I find this dubious, it's a sealed hard drive not a car; where does it go?), then are we going to find the end-of-life on these hard drives to be sooner rather than later?

Your sig says something about being an official HP something-or-other. Does HP have a stance on this officially. I'm still within my 21 day return policy and if I call them up on this, it's going to be either send me a replacement hard drive or get ready to receive the whole laptop. And I don't mean for a depot repair. There's no way I'm going to send the whole thing back and lose it for a month. If I send it to them over such a stupid issue, they can keep it and I'll keep my money.

I know that seems a bit snappy, but I hope everyone else can see how this is going to play out for me and most likely for the rest of you as well. I'm going to call them, they are going to tell me to run the BIOS check. The 00 code will tell them that nothing is wrong at that moment (premature failure of the disk is still likely). The wont replace the hard drive by shipping me a replacement, and if they do convince me to send in the whole laptop, they will tell me they will replace the hard drive no matter what if I ask them, but in reality they will just run the BIOS check, get the 00 code and send me the laptop back telling me there was nothing wrong.

I never came to be an official HP rep... I am a notebook technician who works on units which fall under HP's and a couple other affiliates warranties...

When ever you buy a unit you have have 1 year limited warranty from HP, this covers any manufacturer defects... i.e. Bad HDDs, RAM, CPU, LCD, Logic board, etc...

Unfortunately I can't say what other services do... but as long as you send a problem description they that you hear a strange beep... We have to preform tests to try and replicate the issue... if we can't it goes to tier 2 tech, who makes sure that there really isn't an issue with the unit...

If this happens all the time or in certain cases please state that, tell support how and when it happens.

I too think I have this same problem. The "beep" is of an electronic nature that appears to emanate from an internal speaker source in the region localized in the left hand side of the keyboard.

I have read this may have something to do with a change in CPU power states. This might account for the seemingly randomness of the sound. Not sure if this is the same sound: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=85477&page=7

Nah, it's less of a click and more of a beep. And from what I've read elsewhere hear, at least the clicking-type noise is related to Hitachi drives. I sent my brand new dv2700t back because of this, and I was within the 21 days return policy. I have an exchange going on right now. We'll see how it goes.

I'd be happy to tell you how it goes. But so far, it's only gotten mucked up by outsourced phone support. I swear, what a joke. These people are supposedly there to help, but it's been three days and the order is already screwed up.

    SO...

I pressed the magic option 1 in the phone system for new orders. I was honest with the girl, I told her I had what I thought to be a complicated situation, I explained to her my frustration and utter lack of help from the oursourced area, and she told me that she would try and help me.

15 minutes later, everything ironed out, all my credits were in the process of going through, and apparently I'm supposed to receive a confirmation email here shortly.

Moral of the story, use the 1st phone system option for new orders and avoid the hassle of outsourced sales "support". Over time, HP will realize customers are pressing that option and taking up all the time of their valuable "ringers" and issue a policy that those people are only allowed to assist new customers. But until that time comes, I'm going to get some good customer service for a change and screw the guy who has to wait on hold for a couple extra minutes to place a new order he should have done online anyway.

Oh, and the expected return date of the new laptop is 25th of March, but she said there was some sort of expidite option she could do. We'll see if that changes anything.

I'm pretty sure I have the video problem one even though my display works and my games work and everything but I HAVE had so much trouble getting any drivers to work at all on this video card and the driver dates always randomly change from like August 2005 to like July 2007 and random old dates its weird.

Hi! I ran into this thread while I was Googlin about the HDD beep (!) I hear from my new laptop. I have an HP/Compaq Presario V6630 /w Pentium Dual Core T2330, 2 GB RAM, 120 GB Samsung SpinPoint M5 HDD for about a month. Since I was glad that it didn't suffer any whine (or more scientifically line noise caused by the CPUs high frequencies) it has two distinct weird things. First, I noticed a really tough "clicking" noise (imagine it to be a shallow and hard touchpad button click) coming from the HDD. It occurs randomly, does not interrupt anything (such as playing video or audio), does not freeze or crash the computer and is eager to happen at idle or not so busy disk times but still annoying, though. I made a small research and found out it "may be" a way of calibrating disk read/write heads in case the disk platters expand and shrink by temperature differences during use. This makes sense since PMR heads (heads which new high density HDDs use to allocate more data in perpendicular magnetic domains rather than horizontally alligned magnetic domains "PMR head -> Perpendicular Magnetic Recording") are more prone to thermal effects. But the second weirdie I get has no wise explanation. Again, my HDD randomly generates a slightly long "beep" sound such as the BIOS error messages in POST screen of PCs. I have a straight clue that the sound comes from the HDD, that is when this sound comes, the HDD led lights up as long as the beep lasts. I checked the HDD with the tool included in the BIOS and Windows XP's Scandisk (chkdsk utility) and HD Tune's Error Check utility. Nothing erroneous showed up. Here I saw many people having this unidentified noise like I did. So what should I do? Is this a normal thing that the hi-tech has gifted us or a paranormal issue that should end up with the laptop gone (to a service station or for a refund)?

i've been hearing this sound too on my brand new compaq presario cq70-140ed. we bought it october 16, and the manufacture date is september 2008 so i doubt it's the hard drive failing. we noticed the noise within the first day of using the computer. after googling i came to realize that it's probably the hdd head parking thing, and thus i stumbled upon this thread. i tried changing the power settings as described above by BLACKMAMBA123, but i just heard the clicking sound again. although in general i think the computer seems to be a bit quieter. i'll keep monitoring it though as i just made the changes within the last 20 minutes or so.

usually within the first few minutes of turning the computer on i'd hear one short beep. then (although i haven't timed it exactly) i'd hear the clicking sound from the left of the touchpad every 10-15 minutes or so.

i think it's the same clicking/screeching sound everyone else is describing. i'd sort of describe it as sounding similar to when you open the dvd drive only a bit quicker sounding and higher pitched, if that makes sense. it's a bit hard to record the sound as it's a bit random.
