    Hello to all,

I just came across a compaq presario 700 laptop, and while reinstalling windows I noticed that it would shut off(and it was extremely hot) after taking it apart I then noticed that the cpu fan does not come on, at all(after 10-15min) so I automatically though that it was the cpu fan. So I brought one off of ebay, and still the same thing the fan never spins up(and offcorse it gets hot and shuts down). My question is how can I zero down on this problem?

could this be a motherboard problem, and how do I trouble shoot it, I have a digital multimeter, is it possible to check out the fan connector on the motherboard to see if its having a problem?(I know I will have to have a electric chart for these laptops), or can I check both fans some how?
    Is this possible?

also have anyone ever heard of this kind of problem with this model of the presarios?

I checked google but could not find anything!

any help would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

well it sounds like a motherboard problem since u replaced the fan and the same happens. cud be the fan isnt even gettin any power to start. could be a bios issue whereby the fan just doesnt start at all? when u first turn the laptop on, does the fan work? if not then very likely the power to the fan connection.

not having done much of this before but turn ur laptop on, use a multimeter to measure if theres any current being sent to the fan connector. i dunno about laptops but i think in desktop fans the voltage is 3.3?

I used to have one of those.

    The problem was windows.

Linux ran flawlessly on it, windows made it lock up, restart or just plain act goofy.

mine was a 710US. sent it back 12 times to try and get the thermal issue taken care of.

ended up using it as a $1200 frisbee one day.

bought it for my engineering classes, and some of the windows-only software I needed to run just wouldn't run on it. It flew straight out of my 4th floor dorm window into the commons.

    I don't miss it either.
