hi all, was wondering if i could switch the cd/dvd drive in one zx5000 i have that has overall better specs (mine) with the dvd+r drive in my fiancees zx5000. she doesn't use it and i would, but it doesn't look like an easily swappable thing and i haven't yet tried to open it. can anyone shed some light? am i likely to run into hardware/driver issues doing this, or should they, in theory, have the same drivers on the install cds?
thanks!

do you by chance work for HP, Venombite? You know a hell of a lot on about their laptop models, lol
HP Compaq nx7010, 512 RAM, PM 1.5 Ghz, 64 MB ATI 9200, 40 GB 4200 rpm, WSXGA (1680x1050) -
I'm sorry, I'm a bit confused. On your subject line you entered that you have an NX5000, but in you message you have a ZX5000, can you verify which one you have?
If it's the ZX5000, I believe it should be fairly easy with a few screws on the bottom should release the CDRW/DVD drive.
If it's an NX5000, it's a Multi-Bay drive and pops out using the eject switch.

Actually, I did [V] and servicing IBM, Toshiba & Compaq notebooks before that. I guess it's time to get a job at Toshiba or IBM [

i am a complete idiot. my first forum post and i messed up the subject line. yes, the model i have is the zx5000! it sort of looks like i would have to take the entire bottom off to get at the drive. don't know how difficult that actually is to do - or if that's even accurate. do you?
anyway, thanks for the response guys. your knowledge is much appreciated!

Well, before you read any further. This is just for educational purposes and I can't be held responsible if any damages occur if you decide to use this info...now that the legal stuff is out of the way.
If you turn the unit upside down so the battery is on the left, there sould be 2 or 3 screws just to the right of the battery. If those were removed, the optical drive should slide out to the right. Just be careful of any ribbon cables that may be attached. You don't want to yank hard and have everything torn out of the unit, that would be bad. You then would just have to unscrew the drive from the cage/bracket and swap.
Personally, I don't think you should be doing this, you're not that familiar with the unit and this caould cause damage and void your warranty. Why don't you just swap units with your fiance. Since they're both ZX5000's they should be somewhat the same in overall specs.
Good Luck!
