You need to fill out the FAQ. Nobody can help you based on that information, you need to disclose your needs.

For $5k you can get anything you want.

Do you need lots of graphics power (CAD, Games, etc)
Is portability or screen size more important? The 12" lappys are a lot smaller than the 17" or even the 20".
How much performance do you need?

    Need more info...

I just received a 8510w. In addition to the stock lappy I got a 200GB drive, 2GB more ram and a big SD card for $2300.
The 8510w is a 15.4 screen, moderately portable at 6lbs. It has the Quadro 570M 256MB which is at the top for graphics power.
The Core2Duo 2Ghz is what it came with, but for the price, I could buy a 2.4Ghz and toss the 2GHZ in the trash and still spend less than 'upgrading' from HP.

With $5,000 go with an alienware, because you can get everything you need and more. I mean you can get dual video cards with SLI support on alienware laptops. If gaming and performance is what you want and you have a $5000 budget get the best that money can buy, and in my opinion alienware is the best in high performance laptops (most would consider them overkill, but you gotta remember that when you buy their laptop it will last you for 3-5 years).

    $5000?

Get yourself a fully loaded 17" MacBook Pro with the 1920x1200 screen and AppleCare.

But buy and install the 4GB of RAM yourself. Get yourself a copy of Windows XP Pro and an external hard drive and you'll be set for years.

Avoid HP and their awful customer service like a plague.
