yo seems like either you dont know what you are doing
or you did get a bad defective one

i would return it if you still got the times

dvts are not highend gaming laptops
but it handles most of the games pretty well

If the heat from the vent can melt a plastic bottle, you probably want to stay away from it cause it can blow up easily at that temp.

Not at all trying to be funny, but if you build computers then why do you need a recommendation on what to buy? It seems like you would already have a good idea of what to get based off of your computer knowledge & needs, especially with desktops.

Also, you may want to be more specific with your exact computer wants/needs (e.g. processor, RAM, hard drive space, etc...) so that people can better point you in the right direction.

Not necessarily. Laptops and desktops are two different beasts.

Although @ OP what laptop is it and specs? I see no detail that can help in that regard.

If its within 21 days, just call them up. Refund no questions asked. They will provide you with a return shipping label. Just be sure to pack it up as it came and include everything that came with it.

my record is 6hrs gaming on my dv6 6100 CTO so far =]]
the keyboard's top left is a bit warm but not unbearable :) and i dont think it can melt anything with the vent :))
I suggest switching to coolest mode in coolsense when playing games. This prevent intel turbo boost since we dont really need it when playing games (which is gpu intensity task)

For some reason I have trouble believing he "melted" his plastic lotion bottle.. My real question though is why you would even have lotion sitting on top of a laptop you're trying to use while gaming?

Clearly, you cannot use your laptop keyboard and have a bottle of lotion sitting on top of your computer.

You sound like a very young individual, if you are as good with computers as you make yourself sound, then just run some basic temperature troubleshooting. I don't even know why you would ask us for recommendations lol. If its a bad or faulty laptop, then get a refund...seems like common sense to me.

Anyways, I still love this laptop for the price I got it for, best laptop yet for me! Temperature is completely bearable, I reach around 80 degrees max while gaming.

I was wondering how long it would be before someone asked about the lotion.

I'd say two things. One run the temp monitoring software and see what's happening there. Two send the thing back and get a replacement. This is not normal behaviour for the HP dv6/dv7 line. they may not be the world's fastest or toughest laptops, but they don't generally overheat like this either.

If you buy TV or refrigerator and it doesn't work, you don't try to figure out why, it's new, take it back and get it replaced.

facepalm i never said it was on top of the FREAKING LAPTOP it was right next to the vent laying down and it was one of the small bottles that you get from a hotel bathroom so dont try going to conclusions

Look, I have a dv6t with the same 6770. I don't get a lot or crashes playing games, but the thing gets ridiculously hot, which HP says is fine. My core temps during gaming can go to 95 C each. Surprisingly the 6770m is not that hot. MY BIG COMPLAINT is that most of the time you shut down the computer, it just freezes and has to be hard reset, scandisked, etc. I THINK THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. It seems to happen less when you stay on the same power type (ie. battery only off to on the whole time, or ac only off to on the whole time). If you switch power types, forget about a proper shutdown. AND YES, I have the latest bios and have 30 years of computer building and troubleshooting experience. HP NEEDS TO FIX THIS WITH ANOTHER BIOS UPDATE. IT MUST BE DUE TO GRAPHICS CARD SWITCHING WITH AC VS DC.

Why are u so sure about the BIOS??? Mine run fine by the way, no troubling shutdown or anything like that.
But I confirm about the 95 C LOL. Go to CoolSense and switch to coolest mode. This significantly reduce the temp as turbo boost is disabled in this mode.
PS. I found turbo boost more efficient in everyday use rather than playing games

I've got a dv6z with a 6750M and even with ocing to 2.4GHz my CPU never gets much over 80C. you have to OC the AMD APUs into the 2.6 range to get it to 90C. The core i CPUs appear to just run much hotter. My Sony SA with a core i5 hits 90C all the time when gaming.

Coolsense will keep it around 75 c instead of 95,
    but I PAID FOR A 2.6ghz i7, not a 2.0 ghz with coolsense.
2ghz is not that fast, I would prefer 3.3 or over.

I highly doubt you could melt a bottle with heat coming from a laptop without the laptop shutting down.
in any case, if you like the laptop aside from the heat try and see if you could change the thermal paste, adding a copper shim on the processor/Gpu, adding a cooler.

(My old HP had heat issues that I use the hot air to keep my coffee warm, sadly this added feature from HP is not available for sager laptops :p)
best would be to contact tech support and see if you could have it replaced or refunded.

yea it is can some one supply me with the return service number i call them for it so i can get it over with but they made me "try" to diagnose the problem by first telling me to run hard drive and memory test and make me do driver updates for the fingerprint scanner. and then they gave me the supposed number but it was a number to short -_-

coolsense is available or all model, mine is i7 2630QM WITH coolsense preinstalled
playing games with turbo boost on (coolsense performance mode), it reaches 95C all the time. Annoyingly hot but as long as it doesnt crash or anything, i think we're fine. I switch to Coolest Mode for playing and Performance mode everyday task :)
