if you are gaming, and have the means to install xp, do it.

Will any software you need refuse to run on Vista?

Unless you are really into gaming or otherwise extremely inclined to XP, that machine will run Vista quite well.

Stay with Vista, your specs are off the roof anyway

i guess i will check vista out and see what happens from there. i am into gaming but it is through my Xbox 360 instead of the computer.

it all depends on the software and driver compatibility whether to use xp or vista... some applications still works better on xp...

I would install XP, no doubt about it. I got my dv9700t a while back, it's pretty similar to yours (slower processor, more RAM), and Vista was ridiculously slow (that may be because I have no tolerance for the slowness from having used Linux for a long time, but nevertheless, I felt that it was slower than XP). For my occasional Windows needs (mainly gaming), I installed XP. The only thing is that you will have to use nLite to integrate the SATA HDD driver for the dv9700t into the XP install CD, so if you're not technically inclined, it may be a little difficult for you.

Orev's guide is a great one. This is what I used and my lappie is running like a charm.

    Or off the chain! :D

Anyway, I don't game but if you use the Vista Tweaking Guide found here and blackvipers services guide (google it) you can get vista to run extremely quickly. Add to that Service Pack 1 coming in a month which will further increase performance and vista is more than fast enough :D
