i have a hp 8510p and it has scrolling strip on the right side of it's touchpad. the problem I have is, that it sometimes workes and sometimes i doesn't.

it doesn't matter if I'm surfing the web or scrolling through folders, documents, etc - the scrolling doesn't work always.

does anybody else experience the same problem? how can I solve it?

I find the scroll pad part kind of finicky. It needs to be touched in the right spot but once you find it it's all good...

    ohhh yeah

i hope they will release a software update. it should work just like the scroll wheel of a regular mouse.

FWIW, the touchpad on my T61 works fine on the "All programs" menu in the start menu.. this is vista btw. If I can offer any help to get yours working, let me know.

thanks for the offer braddd but Im affraid the problem lies with the crappy HP software.

another problem I have is with the touch sensitive volume buttons. besides the fact that they feel kinda flimsy, they dont work always like they should.

when im watching a video for example and want to change the volume, the volume control seems to be lagging or sometimes doesnt work at all. anyone else experienced that?

man, all these software issues make me (almost) wish I bought a T61p...
HP makes great hardware but really crappy software. I experienced that recently when I bought a new HP printer. the printer itself was really great, but the driver software was buggy as hell.

HP, please hire some capable programers!!

Err, the scrolling in Vista's start menu work with the Synaptics driver, but ONLY if you have clicked on something within the all programs box.
I know with a mouse, you can scroll without having to first click on something within the All Programs box.

I don't know how to get to it in vista, but try this:
    1. Go in to the mouse properties in the control panel
    2. Click on the [Synaptics Logo] Device Settings tab,
    3. Select Synaptics Touchpad v x.x, then click the settings button
    4. Expand the "Virtual Scrolling" tree on the left side of the dialog box
    5. Select "Scrolling Region"

You should now see a box with shaded areas representing the scroll zones. Try enlarging the right-hand scroll zone (i.e, drag the area a little bit towards the center). The vertical scrolling should work better now.

This doesn't solve the problem that we are discussing here, which is the inability for the Synaptics virtual scroll to actually scroll within All Programs box without having to click on something in there first.

Sorry about that; I guess I need to read the threads more carefully next time!

Again, I am unfamiliar with vista, but try giving this a shot:

Follow the same steps that I mentioned earlier about the touchpad, except this time, instead of clicking on "Scrolling Region", click on "Scrolling Selection". You will see two options: "Scroll item under pointer" and "Scroll selected item". Whatever it is currently set to, change it to the other setting; for example, if it's set to "Scroll selected item", change it to "Scroll item under pointer", and vice-versa.

I hope this helps. Again, I haven't used Visa enough to know if this will actually work or not.

I didnt even bother installing the synaptics touchpad drivers after the clean install.. mostly because i use an external mouse

If you dont install the drivers you dont get the side scroller on the touchpad, giving you more touch space. My personal preference though i found the side scroller annoying

Even if the Synaptics Drivers are installed, you can always disable the scroll zones on the touchpad (A.K.A. "Virtual Scrolling"). Just click on the "Virtual Scrolling" option like I stated earlier (except this time, don't expand the tree). You should see checkboxes for enabling the vertical and the horizontal scroll zones. Uncheck both boxes.
