I tried doing a clean install of XP on my old notebook (zx5280us). Install seemed to run fine and it worked fine. Updated with SP2 as well as other windows updates and installed trend micro internet security suite. (did all that yesterday)
anyways, when booting up the notebook, it freezes on the screen where it shows the windows logo on a black background with a progress bar underneath. the progress bar freezes and the notebook never finishes booting up
tried safe mode, safe mode with network, regular boot, and last known good configuration. none of them worked.
only thing that got past that screen was safe mode with command prompt, which i dont know how to use.
any ideas on how to fix this problem?

May want to try using the Windows' recovery console--it's available if you boot from the XP disc.

my brother managed to do a system restore and everything seemed fine. however, he ran the updates for windows and the problem came back. looks like one of the updates are causing the issue.
any tips how to figure out which update specifically is causing the issue? also, any ideas of what to do? -
You might want to look at the windows restore points and see what the last point was created for and if that was when your problem started. I had a similar experience where an update was installed (Software distribution service 2.0) automatically and it sporadically cut off my internet access, I figured out what it was through the restore points because windows will create restore points for many of the updates it installs. Windows update has been disabled ever since.

through the restores, my brother isolated the update that caused the problem.
everything is running smoothly now. the only remaining issue is after clicking shutdown, the computer tells you its now safe to turn of your computer instead of shutting itself off (behaves like a 98 for shutting down)
any idea how to fix that?
thanks for the help so far guys
