i have a Compaq v2000.. it shuts abruptly when working on batt or powersupply.... but it works fine when i leave a gap at the bottom so that the air flow is possible.. but otherwise when kept on a flat surface it switch off automaticallly without any warning..

    Hi.

First i'd download MobileMeter to check the actual temperature of your system. I have the v2000z, with a Turion chip. At idle, it reads around 50ºC, and at full speed, 60ºC.

If it shuts down, yours should be reaching temperatures over 90ºC, and that's far too hot. If that's the case, you can do several things.

    1. Find a way to leave that gap you talk about. It definitely helps to cool down a laptop.
    2. Use power management options to force your system to run at lower speeds when full power is not needed. That will reduce temperatures, specially when idle.
    3. Undervolt your system. It helps at both reducing temperature and obtaining extra battery life. There's an excellent post about it in this forum. Just search for it.
    4. Get a laptop cooler.

Anyway, once you install MobileMeter post again your temperatures. V2000 usually ships with a hot HDD, which doesn't help system temperature at all, but i have never experienced a shut down and neither should you.

    Hope this helps.
    Cheers, mate.

On my dv1000t, I have the 12 cell battery. The battery isn't flush with the bottom of the laptop, it bulges out slightly. This bulge lifts the laptop off of the table it rests on, and actually lifts the screen a fraction of an inch.

This might be an easy way to allow better air flow to your v2000, if the v2000 also can accomodate the 12 cell battery option.

Also gives your laptop amazing battery life!

(FYI, my battery shows 67 degrees when under normal use)

Do not block the vents of the laptop and it will be ok. Always put it on hard surfaces with no table-cloth or other soft materials.
Undervolt the CPU using RMClock; as Dihan said search the undervolting thread (Undervolting L2000....)

what you should do is just prop the back of the laptop with a book. it helps keep it cool and improves your posture :)
