    Hey all,

Upon opening my brand new hp 2550se and starting it up, I see one bright green pixel and bright blue stuck on the screen and they won't go away. Really disappointing and has bumbed me out since this is the first laptop I actually have purchased. Is there anything I can do, or do I bring it back to Bestbuy?

    Thanks in advance

If I were you, I would bring it back to Best Buy for an exchange.

You may want to try some of those programs that flash different colours on the screen. I've tried this, but in my cases, it never worked.

    Thanks for the reply

What programs are you referring to?

Also, should I continue calibrating the battery, or should I just turn the darn thing off?

I see. Does this just change the colour of the screen, or will it actually tell me if I have a dead pixel?

I too bought a dv2550se that had a bright green stuck pixel - couldn't make it go away. I returned it to Best Buy only to get another dv2550se with a dark red/bluish stuck pixel. This one looks like a speck of dust (rather than bright), so I learn to live with it.

Also, I tried all the stuck pixel remedies I found on the net without success.

Well, I wonder how software could actually remove dead pixel...This is impossible, if it is really DEAD. Bad luck with that laptop, don't hesitate and bring it back to store for replacement.

Dead pixels are typically black or white, they cannot be fixed with software. Stuck pixels come in a variety of colors. The software flashes a rainbow of colors on the screen, one after another. This jostles the pixels in an attempt to get it "unstuck". It takes a while, but I've heard it working if you run the program for 4+ hours. However, if the laptop is within the return policy, it's easier to exchange it out.

Thanks, Lithus.. It's great to know that this is possible...But I have never had BLACK dead pixels as they are normally colored.

Thanks very much for all the help guys. Just wondering if they give me a new battery with the laptop as well? And also do you think they will give me a lot of trouble? I just bought this laptop on 5 days ago, so I think it's still under that "14 days of customer satisfaction or money back" motto they have. ToxicBanana, how was your experience with the exchange (sorry to hear about the return of dead pixels on your exchange)?

Maybe this is a problem with Canadian 2550se? I also live in Canada.

Black dead pixels are near impossible to detect. They're so small your eye can't see it unless it's dead center. Even if you do see it, it'll usually be only for a split second and you'll pass it off as dust.

I don't think being in Canada would have anything to do with it.

However, with that being said, in the last week I have bought three 2550se's from Best Buy in Canada. Two with a stuck green pixel and one with a faulty touchpad.

I am going to be taking the third one back tomorrow and I will stick with my dv1000 for a little while longer.

It is quite disappointing since it is such a nice looking machine.

Yah it really is. The Best Buy near me just ran out of stock. The Sales Manager said that he would tell me when they had new stock and he would personally check everything and install Microsoft Office. Hopefully out of all their new stock, there is at least one that isn't a lemon :).

P.S. Surprised to hear about the three that you bought! Is the 2550se manufactured poorly? I haven't really heard about this many problems with the regular dv2000 line.

I bought this laptop last week, I was sold on the specs and appearance.

Brought it home and saw very 2 noticeable pixels, Green and Blue. I am very picky when It comes to this stuff, I dont know maybe I just like a perfect screen to look at all day lol.

Anyways brought it back right away and I made them open 3 more in the store, all still with the exact same problem. Some had 1 pixel others had up to 4.

So it was almost closing, I tried one more with a green pixel on the left side. Tried it out for a week just was not happy still and decided to head back to best buy, tried another 2 both with the same problem so I just returned the damn thing.

I tried a total of 6 or 7 of these things in a week and just became very very frustrated.

I've had many laptops in the past, Acer, Toshiba, IBM and HP, none ever had a bad pixel.

Ahh well.. guess I need to search for a new laptop I guess..

Wow...I'm surprised this topic has not come up before. Or maybe I just haven't seen another thread like this. Do many people own this laptop?

Silentbrown, if you don't mind me asking, where do you live?

I live in Richmond Hill, Ontario Canada

Bought the Laptop in Newmarket, and tried all the various exchanges at the Richmond Hill and Woodbridge locations due to not enough stock at some of them.

Next time this happens, give this a shot:

I had a stuck pixel on my 24" monitor when I first got it. I was bummed to as the LCD was very expensive, so I started digging around online. I read that if you rub the pixel, it will go away sometimes. I gave it a shot. I took a microfiber cloth, and rubbed the dead pixel with pretty good pressure to see if it would go away, and it actually did.

If it happens again, try that and see if it fixed it. Good luck laptop searching. :)

Although I don't have the DV2550se (I thought about buying it but bought the TX1210 instead at Futureshop last week), I bought my HP ze5300 at Best Buy about 4years ago and it has one stuck pixel. Maybe it's a HP-Best Buy thing with stuck pixels?

The stuck pixel doesn't bother me at all. It did at first but I've gotten used to it and I don't notice it at all on most applications.

odd, my cto has zero dead pixels. In fact, I would say this screen is on par with the sony fz high color screen. The lighting is wonderful, color saturation excellent.

The exchange was quicker than buying the laptop - in and out in 10 min without any hassle. They hassle you more when you buy the damn thing.

After reading this thread, I am amazed at how many bad screens have been shipped with the Canadian dv2550se? I bought mine in Scarborough and exchanged it in Ajax. I wonder if HP knowingly shipped these computers with a batch of screens with quality issues.

I ordered it first online and had it ship to Scarborough. When I went to pick it up, they said they didn't have any in stock, even though Best Buy sent a confirmation e-mail saying it was available for pick up. I tried at Downsview in Toronto. They had 9 open-boxes. All of them were due to bad pixels.

Sorry it took so long to report back.

But yah I just got my HP replacement THIS week if you can believe it or not (after waiting what seemed like an eternity for Best Buy to get stock). Apparently they didn't have stock until this week. But yeah the funny thing is that they only had 3 of them left and they were all opened boxes. I was disappointed at first but we turned them on and one of them didn't have dead pixels. I checked it and have been running it now for half a week and it seems to be working like a normal laptop. I am definitely curious as to why it was an opened box though, hopefully nothing is wrong with it.

As for going back to BestBuy at Downsview for major purchases, I definitely won't. I asked the sales manager to call me back when they had stock numerous times, and ended up checking their system computer (at the store) myself to get the information --since he never called. Also the staff are so unhelpful and rude to customers, not all of them but a fair amount. Thankfully I found one good manager that helped get the HP set up and out of the store.

As for the opened box, I received around 120 dollars off retail price, and seeing as there was nothing wrong with the laptop, I took it. Maybe I should go back and check since lightning said that they had dead pixels.

Thanks to everyone for the help btw, much appreciated.
