My new tx1000 seems to have a click coming from the right side. It is only ocasional, once every few minutes. It is either a single click sound or a double. I envision the sound as the hard drive docking the arm or something. Has anyone else had experience with this?

Is it normal (it is not that annoying) or is my hard drive on it's way out?

    Thanks

last time I heard a clicking sound coming from my hard drive, I backed it up because it crashed soon after.

well if it is a failing hard drive (which it most probs is) BACKUP NOW! you may not have long before it dies. Better to be safe than sorry.

I have the same unit. You shouldn't have any clicking sounds. Mine is silent. I would definitely back up the data and call HP support.

ive had a clicking hard drive suddenly stop clicking almost a year ago and its still fine, but you should backup your stuff and get the drive checked. go to the manufacturer of the drive's site and download a diagnostics application to check. also maybe speedfan can see if there is a SMART error

Well I just got done with HP support. "Elena" suggested that I run the Hard-Disk test in the Bios. I did that and it gave my hard drive a clean bill of health. I have backed everything up. I suppose I will accept this as assurance that my hard drive is ok, I will continue to search forums to find anyone else with this sound.

    Thanks for the input.

Um like I mentioned find out what brand your drive is using device manager or hdtune or everest or speedfan or whatever and try their diagnostic software, it would probably be better

OK, OK, well I downloaded SeaTools (It's a Seagate) I had problems getting Seatools to run, but it did allow me to read the help file that explained 90+% of drives that can boot windows pass SeaTools. I went to the Seagate Knowledge Base and found this answer regarding noise:

Hard drives will make noise during normal use. The level and type of noise may change depending on the function the drive is performing. Users must be able to distinguish normal noises from detrimental, abnormal noises.

    Normal sounds include:

    Whining noise during drive spin-up.

Regular clicking or tapping sounds during drive access.

Hard clicks when the drive heads park.

I think I am going to write this sound off as heads parking and wait a week and see if it gets worse.

Thanks again for putting me on the right path.

I doubt you have a problem. My dv6000 has been making clicking sounds from the day I bought it back in February. At first I was a bit concerned, but realized the clicking is normal sounds made by the drive as it parks and spins up/down during less active times.

I agree, it's probably normal sounds, it just stuck out because my dv6000t does not make any such sounds.

Oddly enough mine is a dv6000t (a dv6265ca actually), and since I generally work in a quiet area, I heard the clicking right from day-one. But as long as it works as expected, I don't care about faint noises like that.

    It's all good.

The click you hear is probably the head actuator docking and undocking the actuator arm. Since laptops are energy conscience, they power down when the drive is idle, and power up when it's needed. Mine clicks and clacks every few minutes- not a problem.

But always keep backups, just in case!

It's just going into low power mode...parking the head to save energy. The Hitachi drive in my Compaq does the same thing, and I can turn it off by changing (or disabling) the Advanced Power Management setting of the drive. I checked the spec sheet, and the less than 1 watt power savings wasn't enough for me to want to put up with that slightly annoying noise.

If Seagate doesn't have a utility that allows you to change the Advanced Power Management setting, you can use Hitachi Feature Tools to do it.

Yeah I just purchased my laptop a couple of days ago and I noticed that it is clicking. I looked in the control panel my power settings is set that it doesn't turn off my drives but I still hear clicking. Any other suggestions?
