I searched around on here and found a few mentions of HP_RECOVERY but nothing that answered my question. What is on this drive? Windows won't let me view the contents.

I want to install Windows 7, but the partition manager will only let me shrink my C partition by about 10 gigs - Windows 7 needs 16 gigs. HP_RECOVERY is another 10 gigs, and I'd like to delete it, but I don't know what it's being used for.

I saw someone say "burn backup discs, and then you're okay to get rid of HP_RECOVERY". I tried to burn backup discs using HP Recovery Manager -> Recovery Disc Creation. However, when I try to do this, I get the error "This computer does not have a drive capable of creating CDs or DVDs. Contact HP support." What a nightmare. I bought this tablet PC in January and I've barely used it at all because of how incredibly slow it is, even after removing the bloatware. I was told that Windows 7 would be faster, hence my trying to install it.

I do have the Application and Driver Recovery CD, and the 2 System Recovery DVDs from HP - I managed to have them send these to me. Are these the equivalent of what I'd end up with if my attempt to create discs with HP's Recovery Disc Creation would have been?

Please let me know what I can do here. If I neglected to include any important info, let me know and I'll do my best to supply that. Thanks in advance!

Its just the recovery partition, contains the necessary packages to put the system back to foctory state by pressing F11 on boot up. Essentially it performs the same function as the restore DVD's and thats why people suggest deleting it once you have a working restore DVD.

As far as the revcovery disc creator error. Have you tried installing this patch...

There is another patch for the recovery disc creator which you can download from the HP support site as well.

Now, the restore DVD's that HP shipped to you is again pretty much the same as the restore DVD's you can burn or the partition. This should again be capable of putting the system back to factory state (assuming that they sent you the correct ones).

miner, thanks for the info, very useful stuff, I appreciate it. I erased that backup partition and I'm giving Windows 7 another shot, hopefully this (and the upcoming RC) can redeem this computer!

Also, I tried the patch and it didn't work - I ran it and the setup dialog started, but then nothing else happened. Oh well, I do have the Recovery Discs from HP (which I've used to format this once already) so I should be good based on what you said. Thanks again!
