after hearing so much about ubuntu, i thought i'd give it a try. i popped out my hard drive and installed the one i use in an external enclosure. a few seconds after booting off the disc, i get the following message:

[ 31.610787] input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard on isa0060/serio0

i tried asking about this on ubuntu's forum without much help. basically, i was told that my keyboard isn't being detected and that it's most likely a bug. i've read of others with the same laptop having sucess installing ubuntu... just not me. i was thinking that maybe i should connect the usb keyboard i have on my desktop and trying... but i thought i'd ask about it first before going through all the hassle. for all i know my laptop keyboard may never be detected. anyone else have the same problem or have a solution?

My first guess would be a BIOS bug. See if there's a newer BIOS available from HP's Software and Drivers section. Standard protocol for doing BIOS upgrades is to disable power management (set Power Scheme to Always On), unplug all USB devices, and shut down as many other programs as you can. (I'm not kidding about the USB devices thing. That's actually helped several people with other HP notebooks.)

I suppose it's theoretically possible that you have a different keyboard revision and that's causing problems, but I'd be very surprised.

my bios is current as well as all the drivers. i'm going to try one last time with the 32 bit version of ubuntu, though i don't see why it would matter. if it doesn't work, i guess i'll just stick to xp. thanks.
