The umber is brown. I think it's ugly. The Steel Grey is $25 extra, though.

    I went with grey.

If you may, could you provide pics of the laptop?
Because I already saw some black ones and it looks quite good.

    I like steel gray more

depends how much the $25 is important to you (with 425 off it's closer to around $18 for the upgrade)

They both look nice tbh. The dark umber looks black most of the time unless there's a lot of light like if you're using it outside, at which point it looks dark red. But it collects fingerprints fairly easily whereas the steelgrey doesn't really at all (or you can't see them anyway).

I went to Best Buy to look at some of the Pavilions and thought the Dark Umber looked great. I vote for Dark Umber.

Also make sure you get the 1920x1080 display upgrade! because that upgrade is more important than anything else. 1366x768 is a low resolution for a 15-inch screen.

The steel grey looks like brushed stainless, similar to high end appliances. I didn't order it, but got one of the early DV7TQE-6001 series when they were all coming in steel grey, and I really like it! It doesn't attract any fingerprints at all. The dark umber isn't bad looking by any means, but I think the fact that it's a fingerprint magnet would drive me nuts.

I've seen both in person and you can't really go wrong but personally I prefer the steel grey because the contrast with the black keyboard and track pad look really nice and the dark umber collects fingerprints too much.

I was worried about the black as well because I thought it would pick up fingerprints. I had it for a couple days and it didn't, though, unless your fingers were really greasy. At the same price it would be a close call and I might pick gray. But it certainly isn't worth $25 more, at least to me.

I don't understand why people say Umber Black is a fingerprint magnet. I've gone to my local Sam's Club and Costco several times this week just to play with their dv6's and dv7's (and dm4 to see how it compares to the Envy 14) and see nothing.

I also think the black looks better than gray but to each his own.

(disclaimer: whenever someone says "fingerprint magnet", I think iPad 1. the dv6 material is not an iPad 1.)

That's the umber, it's not quite black, it's a brownish color.

Maybe check out the dark umber in person first before you judge it. It's actually quite nice. pictures don't do it justice.

I don't think so. I just went to Sam's Club and they had 2 DV6s on display. One was the regular dark umber and the other was more of a bronze color. They looked similar, but they definitely had different colors.

I think that "dark bronze" is a reseller-only color while the CTO ones only come in steel grey and dark umber.

Exactly. The grey is marginally better (at least based on HP's pictures, I haven't seen them in person), but $25 is the difference between the 6490M and the 6770M.

Best Buy's product page does say Dark Umber, though. It is Best Buy so take it for what it is worth but I find it hard to believe that they would produce a different color for resellers.

Dunno if it is or not, but there are definitely a brownish color between dark umber and steel grey, and that matches what he was saying.

edit: Just looked at the BB models.. and there's a color called espresso black... Maybe I got it mixed up the brown color was umber and the darker one was espresso?

edit 2: A quick search turned out this from the HP website. The picture is the same as the dark umber DV6. Strange, I wonder why HP doesn't offer espresso black as a color choice. Must be very new, it's not even listed as a quick ship model even when you go to the dv6zqe configure page.

edit 3: Even stranger, the "unpackaged weight" is only 5.35 pounds when the CTO dv6zqe models are listed at 6.1 pounds. I thought that this was without the battery at first but I looked up a quick ship dv6tse notebook and the "unpackaged weight" was the same as the listed 5.78 pounds.

All I know is that the dv6-6135dx I had from Best Buy for a couple of days was black. In bright light it did look sort of brown, I'll admit, but it was definitely black.

In any case, the one dark umber HP is shipping now, is more black than brown. You won't even notice the brown unless you look for it.

Looked sort of brown in certain lights =/= it being brown. In different lights, colors can look like other colors. In most lights it was black with no brown tint. In bright light it had a brownish tint but it was still more black than brown. I repeat, it was definitely black.

I got my steel gray and it looks great, but it does not look like a macbook which is plain silver this has a texture
