Unfortunately I didn't upgrade my memory from 6gb to 8gb from the factory...right now newegg's got a deal on some G.SKILL 8gb 1333 slabs for $70...a couple questions for you guys..

    1.) What is OEM? 1066?

2.) I heard that if you don't have two of the same GB sticks, the performance will lag (i.e having one 4gb and one 2gb for 6gb). Any truth to this?

3.) I was thinking about selling my OEM's, but in the future if I do a warranty fix that's not due to the RAM, could I get in trouble with HP?

1.) The OEM memory is probably 1333MHz. They used that on last year's models, at least.

2.) Matching sticks allow dual channel to work at full speed, but you won't notice a difference AT ALL either way.

    3.) Sorry, but I don't know.

Thanks City...if they are 1333MHz, i might as well just keep what I got then...

that 3rd question is one of those sort of obvious and "most likely you'll screw yourself over" questions but I was just curious if anyone has updated their memory and sent in for a repair...but yeah, most likely i'm thinking I could get in trouble for it...

I'll debate it some more...but maybe if I can sell my OEM's for $40 or $50, I'd be taking just a $30-20 hit for upgrading to 8gb...i'll have to check ebay prices...

The benchmarks that people have been posting this week with their new 6GB DV6s have shown 4GB Micron and 2GB Samsung 1333 memory in the same laptop. I bought a stick of 4GB Samsung 1333 at NewEgg yesterday for something like $49.

Won't know how it works until the computer gets here in a week or two, but Samsung is good stuff, and AFAIK I bought some that should be OEM to the DV7. The 2GB is going into my G72 to bring it up to 4GB.

So I upgraded two computers for $50 instead of one computer for $60 if I'd ordered 8GB from HP.

Hmm...4GB Micron and 2GB Samsung is OEM? Now you got a 4GB samsung to go with the Micron?

Probably not that big of a difference but isn't it better to have two identical sticks? Or as long as they're the same speed that it's ok?

I'll have to debate it some more among myself but I'm still thinking about those two sticks for $70. I've got another laptop that could use the 6GB. Good idea about upgrading my other laptop. Can't believe that didn't cross my mind. It's got 3GB right now.

Yes and yes. If Micron and Samsung pass HP's factory certification together, that is good enough for me. When I get the computer, I'll run Memtest 86+ for at least five passes, then change the DIMM and run it again.

If NewEgg had Micron, I would have bought that. I used to own stock in Micron, back in the 1990s.

Here's a report on the 4+2 from the factory. Don't know if it's Micron branded or made by Micron or made with Micron chips, but apparently BIOS sees it as Micron. (computer belongs to LuckyGuy)
