Just cloned hd in my thnkpad t41. Used thinkap hd ultrabay adapter and new non-formated hitachi 7,200 rpm drive. Download true image trial. Had my cloned backup drive in 15 minutes. Couldn;t have been easier.
Now.....
would like to replace new C302NR 5400 hd with 7200 rpm hd.
Since the Lappy is new the drive doesn't necessarily need to be cloned (new, only has crap sofware that came with it).
I have th hp/compaq restore disk.
I will remove junk software with the De-crapifier http://www.yorkspace.com/pc-de-crapifier/
Will the restore disks work with a blank drive?
If not what is the best way to get the software loaded on new HD.

HP restore discs should work on a blank drive, if that drive is the same size or bigger if it's like most recovery /partitioning programs.
I went from a 100 to a 120 gig... but I'm not sure if I ran HP recovery, or used Arconis or another partitioning program to clone the drive...
At least in your case you're replacing a drive, so what I'd do is swap out the drive, put the HP recovery disc in and see if it works... If it doesn't then pursue other means to clone the drive, like Arconis, Ghost, etc.
PS: Before doing so backup the C:\SwSetup folder...
