alright well i have a very big problem. ive had this laptop for about a year now and it has worked well for me. yesterday, i turned off my laptop and later that day i went to restart it when i encountered this problem -- it wont start. the following things happen before my computer refuses to start:
first off when i turn it on if asks me how i would like to start my computer (safe mode, normally, last good setting etc..)
next, the computer says that windows(xp) is loading...when it finishes the screen goes black for anywhere between 10-60 seconds then the screen goes blue and i get:
STOP: c0000218 {Registry file failure}
the registry cannot load the hive (file):
\systemroot\system32\config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate
it is corrupt, absent, or not writeable.
beginning dump pf physical memory..
physical memory dump complete.
contact system administrator or tech support for further assistance.
now i am not a great computer person...i know a bit about them but i have no idea what this means. im going to take the things advice and talk to a tech at a computer store near me, but i was wondering if anyone here knew what it means, what i did (if anything) to make this happen, and if there is a way to fix it without having to bring it in. this computer has most of my college work on it and i would love to have it back. any help you can give me would be great.
thank you.

Did you do anything like install software before turning it off last time. I'd try last good config as a place to start.

gennerally if the registry is corrupt you'll have to run a recovery on the notebook

Run diags on the HDD. If it passes then you know you have to repair by using the recovery console with an XP CD.

Its a dv5000, right?
My first HP was a dv5030us and it came with a clean Windows DVD.
If you have that, just start it up with the DVD in the drive. Then go through and do a "repair installation". Not the recovery console, but go through the process like you're going to reinstall Windows but do a repair installation rather than a new installation.
If that doesn't work, then a full blown recovery is what you need to do.
Whatever you do, do NOT pay someone to do it.
It's not a hardware issue at all. It's completely software. You can save yourself a ton of money by doing it yourself.
