    Hello all,

I just received a V2000z from HPShopping.com with a Toshiba 40GB/4200 rpm hard drive. Unfortunately, as others have reported, the left palm area gets really hot. Mobile Meter shows the hard drive temperatures of 50 - 54 Celsius. I have undervolted the CPU successfully to 0.9Vmin/1.1Vmax. That however hasn't helped much with the hard drive.

I have read some threads on hard drive temperatures on L2000/V2000z. However, what's not clear is if anyone has actually upgraded their hard drive on V2000z/L2000 to get a comfortable hard drive temperature. If so, which model hard drive would you recommend and please post your temperature gains.

I'd really appreciate your help in this regard. I use the computer for basic Word processing/browsing and need only a 40-60Gb hard drive.

    Regards,

    KC

I find my L2000 notebook's left palm rest becomes quite warm when recharging the battery. I wouldn't say it gets hot, but it does get warm.

Unfortunately, changing out the hard drive probably will not make the left palm rest much cooler.

    BTW - Nice undervolt :)

    Thanks blksnake for the reply.

Yes I was lucky with the undervolting numbers!

Not very happy with the hot palm rest though. People have mentioned that Hitachi drives are cooler. Are you using a Hitachi drive by any chance? If so, which one?

maybe you could put the drive to sleep after like 30 seconds of inactivity, then it would be cooler. just a thought

My notebook came with a 100GB Fujitsu 4200RPM drive. I shortly replaced it with a Seagate 5400RPM drive which was no cooler (~49 C).

I randomly checked several notebooks based on the L2000/V2000/DV1000 platform (Both AMD & Intel) and noticed approximately the same heat output on each model. I believe it's just the way HP/Compaq designed them.

I think it may be the cases of the V2000s and L2000s, I think they may be a bit too thin and cannot dissipate the heat. Just a thought.

    Thank you for your replies.

Based on the responses, I agree that it's probably the V2000z case that's causing the palm rest to get hot. Perhaps I'll try one of those palm pads. Not sure how useful they are.
