OK, this may be more of a Windows issue.

    I have a new Compaq v2000z.
Several times, in normal use, after burning a CD using the included Sonic application and using Explorer to look around my hard drive, it seems like Windows XP hangs up.
    Control-Alt-Delete doesn't help.
Pressing the "power" button on the laptop doesn't help.
Right now, it's stuck in the Preparing to Hibernate... screen.
I can't get out of this without pulling out the battery AND the power cord, it seems.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

It could be an overheating issue, especially since it happens after burning CDs (which not only produces heat from the drive spinning but is also very RAM and CPU intensive). Try downloading MobileMeter and watching your CPU temperature (if it's supported by your chipset...it should be).

It could also be an issue with Windows. Try runnign antivirus and Spyware scans, and patching everything through Windows update.

Also, you can hold the power button in for several seconds to force a manual shutdown (rather than yanking all power from the computer).

Holding down the power button for 4 seconds will force a shutdown. Beyond that... not sure what's going on.

    (edit: oops, too slow...)

Two general checks to try: run MemTest86+ for at least half an hour (burn the .iso image and boot off it) and use a stress test like Hot CPU Tester Pro to make sure there isn't some other hardware issue. Who makes Sonic anyhow? sonic.com is a Roxio site, which would explain the lockups (if Roxio's software is still as buggy as it was when I gave up on it). You might try uninstalling Sonic and giving something else a try, like BurnAtOnce or the free trial version of Nero.
