Jus got a new compaq v2305 (sempron 3000+, 512, 60gb) charged it up and checked mobilmeter and it said there is 30% wear on the battery! Tried calibrating but it didnt help. Battery lasts 2hours 10 minutes almost the exact same time from a pc magazine review. A turion (ml, 35watt) reviewed from pc magazine lasted 2hours 29minutes, shouldnt the mobile sempron (25 watt) last longer then the turion? Is there something wrong with the battery or is compaq doing this on purpose???? Thanks for the help.

I get about the same 2h30m with mine, a lowly Sempron M 2800+.

But that was what it is supposed to get. You could lower the screen, turn off 802.11G, to squeeze more time out of it.

30% wear level seems kinda high for a brand new battery, but then again, I don't think MobileMeter really detects the battery wear level 100% correctly. But if it is correct, you may want to contact HP and have them send you a new battery. Tell them this one is not holding it's charge properly.

a friend of mine has the exact same model laptop as mine (v2305) and their battery wear is 30% as well. I double checked it with centrino hardware control and still showed 30%. It seems as if they do this to all v2305s. Does compaq do this on purpose so that their sempron model does not outlast their flagship turions in battery life?

It's possible these are only 6 cell batteries, this could explain why it's reporting a 30% wear level (8cells - 30% = 5.6cells) . The batteries might be a similar design (internally), but the cell cound may have been changed. The software may think it's still the original 8 cell battery and bases it on that. My nx8220 has an 8 cell battery and MobileMeter reports it has a 0% wear level.

Since the calculation above seems to give a 6 cell count, with a 30% drop, this could explain it. And if this is correct, you have nothing to worry about.

My sister's v2310 is showing 30% battery wear too on mobile meter, and its a 6 cell, so it just might be a problem with the software.

What does MobileMeter show for Remaining Wattage and Designed Capacity, and can anyone give us the dv1000 6-cell battery numbers for comparison? My zv5000z's 12-cell shows 89644 and 88800 mWh, respectively, with 89644 mWh as the Fully Charged capacity. 0% wear level. (I seem to have the magic battery. No wear after a year and a half.)

The designed full capacity for the v2305's 6 cell battery is 88800mWh and the battery's current full capacity is 61568mWh so i guess thats where the 30% wear comes in.
Yeah its the same one from best buy (canada). Im liking it so far. Good performance, ok with games and relatively light and small. gaming benches:

not bad for an integrated gpu with only a sempron and 384mb ram (128 for gpu)
One thing that isnt so great are the speakers when u put the volume at the highest, some songs sound distorted and viewing angles on the screen arent the greatest but otherwise a great laptop!

Forget the battery, I brought mine back to Staples because it was over heating. The part where your wrists rest when you type got so hot it was uncomfortable to use. Not to mention, I had to turn it off after two or three hours of operation, it would grind to a halt. My battery life with screen brightness turned right down, wireless off.......1 hour 10 mins. I think I got a lemon. I was so disapointed, I picked up a Toshiba A70-WB2, more bang for your buck.
