Has anyone bought an after-market memory upgrade for either the v3000z or dv2000z? I want to grab a gig but not sure which memory to get, so I thought I'd see if anyone else has already done it with success?

    It's ddr2 667 I believe?

For a bonus and unrelated question: can anyone who's installed Vista tell me, does it let you dual boot back into XP or does it completely overwrite it?

AMD's new processor will benefit greatly from 667mhz memory although it can also run with 533mhz chips.

Vista lets you dual boot with your old Windows installation. The original Windows installation is listed as "Other Windows" in the OS list. Vista will, however, overwrite your Linux bootloader if you have one, so install Linux last if you can.

Yes, you want DDR2-667. Remember to buy matched pairs since the Turion X2 is dual channel memory capable. Go straight for a pair of 1GB SODIMMs if you can afford it, Vista will make use of it.

Thank you both very much, so by "matched" does that simply mean get two of the same brand/make/model etc? I would have done that anyways :) Or does it mean something more particular? Thanks!

For memory to work in dual channel mode, you will need memory of the same size, meaning 2X1GB, 2X 512MB, 2X 256MB etc. Having this will alllow it to run in dual channel mode. It does not need to be the same brand or even speed.

As for memory brand I would suggest Crucial 667. I use 1 stick in my V3000z and works like a charm.

Should be my last question about this :)

So I look around websites (newegg for instance) and see DDR2 667 in two flavors, 5300 and 5400. Which one is appropriate for my v3000z?

You can use either. I believe PC5400 is spec'd to run at 675Mhz for some odd reason whereas PC5300 runs at 667MHz. Why such a small differentiation, I dont know. But there also exists a PC4200 and PC4300 so dont know why they did that either!
