I finally got my first laptop, the compaq v3000z. I love it, the screen is nice and bright, and there are no dead pixels, no ripples. The only problem is there seems to be no perfect viewing angle. When I look at it straight on, the bottom on the lcd seems washed out and faded, especially on black backgrounds. If I shift the screen or sit lower it looks fine, but then the top seems way too dark. Is this common with compaq/hp, notebooks?

It's common for all laptops. Try increasing the brightness level.

mmmm bummer. I got it at costco so I can always exchange it for another one. Do you think its worth the time tho, or are they all like that?

I have used 2 different V3000Z's and one dv2000t and all of them had the same sort of viewing angles. The first V3000Z had an AUOptronics screen and the second(current) has Quanta display. The dv2000t had a Samsung. All three had pretty average viewing angles. So, I wouldnt expect any better than probably what you currently have.

Unfortunately most laptops have very narrow vertical viewing angles. They are nowhere near as good as desktop LCDs. (Hopefully in the future, this will improve)

Actually, I don't want my laptop's desktop to be visible from 10meters. I prefer the restricted viewing angle, it's supposed to be personal, isn't it :)

Yeah I notice this also - could it also have something to do with the glossy screen coating they use?

One thing I noticed with this machine (I've had for 2 days now) is the default settings on the Intel graphics card software were awful, so insanely bright and red tinged. It's a little tricky to get white looking white (rather than too red or too blue) with the controls/interface provided.
