ive been using vista ultimate on my compaq c702 laptop with 1.5 gb of ram.
my user experience index is 3.0 and aero and 3d graphics works really smoothly.
im happy with the laptop performance... but when i open 2 apps at a time, i dont get a huge drop in speed...... but my cpu meter keeps touching 100% very often.
is such high cpu usage dangerous for the laptop? will it do a lota harm to my system?
thanks

No, it will not damage the system. Those CPUs are designed to run at 100% all the time without overheating. Even though it spikes to 100% once in a while, most of the time they're still idle. You can rest easy.
Now, if the fan is coming on all the time and the machine seems real hot then that's another matter. It might be wise to investigate why that's happening if that's the case. -
mattireland It used to be the iLand..
If it's running smoothly I don't see any cause for concern. I wouldn't really care unless it's jamming up. I'd consider putting an extra .5gb in there though if you want to use Vista. Just use something like RM Clock to check the temperature of your CPU. It should be below 60-70 degrees centigrade and preferable less than 30 degrees centrigrade. If it's about 70 then I think you should be a bit concerned.

Although the others are probably right, I'd still run the typical anti-virus & anti spyware stuff just to make sure the high CPU isn't due to something.

He's stating that the CPU only spikes up to 100% when he opens the application. You have to worry about viruses when your computer is idle, you aren't running any programs, and your CPU is spiking. Other than that your laptop and CPU are completely normal. Like InlawBiker stated, CPU's are designed to run at 100%. I also agree with mattireland, you should have a MINIMUM of 2GB of RAM with Vista. Other than that your laptop sounds perfectly healthy.

what kind/speed cpu do you have?
-
maybe it too dusty in ur fan or heatsink
Try to dust it... -
Vista is also processing in the background to maximize the system. CPU's can tolerate high usage/heat. You'll know if it's too hot 'cause the system will shut down to save itself.

But if the processor is at max it will in turn produce heat.
-
Yes the processor will produce more heat if it is at max all the time, but nothing to cause concern. CPU's are designed to be able to run at 100% for extended periods of time. Also, from what he describes, it reaches max CPU when he opens multiple programs. This is normal, unless the CPU was at 100% for extended periods of time, unless they are very demanding programs. He never really states what programs he is using, and unless we know what they are and describes more about how long the CPU is at 100% we won't be able to truly know why it is like that.
very high cpu usage! cause of concern?
