hi friends i recently got a new hp dv6165 laptop with radeon 6770m 2gb, i7 onboard. the problem is almost all movies that i play are not crisp and sharp. the movies are pixelated. most are dvd rips. however these movies play very well on my old compaq. if i play br rip movies on the hp then it does play very well. i have already updated the latest bios and graphic card drivers. is this something to do with the GPU because 720p or above movies play fine on my laptop.

What software are you using to play your movies, also hardware acceleration processing can look different to software, If you are looking for a good free player VLC player is one of the best.

I am using vlc and tried the default player but the videos especialli the blacks arent smooth. This cant be noticed on the light colors. Cud you pls tell what is hardware acceleration. If my 4 yr old compaq cud handle these videos why can this beast???

I tried disabling hardware acceleration on VLC Player , but it is still being used according to the AMD system monitor app it`s still running.

Video`s play perfect for me, you dont have a full hd screen do you?

Also do you have a dual video system , Intel+Amd , can you switch between them, is the video the same?

Have you tried updating your video drivers?

Have you tried a different video player? , "Windows Media Player Classic home Cinema" i a good one to try.

Try change to the OpenGL video renderer in VLC Player.

i will do that as soon as i get home..

In order to change video renderer, download the newest VLC media player, navigate to Tools>Preferences. Switch to show all settings (bottom left corner)>Scroll down to Video>Output modules, you can try some of them, like OpenGL or DirectX, but after changing settings, close VLC and only then play video.

    dvd-rip = typical 480p

you blow up 480p into 1080p without any post-processing, pixelated is normal.
And you said 720p and up look fine so the problem probably is not in the set up.

maybe if you can cut a clip, other can see if the source is the problem

Edit: Also it is possible that now you have a better screen and got different black level , will also show non-smooth black.

maybe your right... though the issue is with all blacks!! i'm sort of getting used to it. I did play brothers in arms on maxed out settings and it was fine... so maybe its the way i look at it

You should try to connect an external monitor to the laptop and see whether the same problem occurs or not. If no, that's the way the display works.
