Hi Im curious , I had understud that windows vista would run better on 2gb mem ram , my usage would only be internet , downloading music, burning movies and songs, not much gaming . do I really need the 2gb of ram or will it be two slow with vista?

Vista is much better with 2gig if you plan on using the aero interface. My Compaq amd64x2 was acceptable with 1gig and Vista and aero - but there were regular delays, even when opening MS Word, etc. It's much better with two gig. Even with the basic use you're talking about, I'd say its worth the upgrade since ram prices are pretty cheap right now.
So here's the short answer for you: you don't NEED 2gb of ram and it won't necessary be TOO slow with Vista (depending on the rest of your cpu, of course), but it's a heck of a lot better with 2 gig. -
If you want to preserve your hard drive for as long as possible, get at LEAST 2gb ram for Vista. Vista is a pretty large OS compared to XP and uses more ram than XP. Sure, you can run 1gb, heck even 512mb (i've tried it and it took well over 15 minutes to load everything). The reason behind this is because once your computer runs out of ram, it uses your hard drive to temporarily store information, hence stressing your hard drive. When i used 512mb ram to load vista, my hard drive was going crazy (lREALLY fast constant clicking noises).

Here's the thing. 1GB of RAM is the minimum amount of RAM you should have when using Vista. The best way to go is 2GB or more. As the previous two posts state, you should really have a minimum of 2GB with Vista, especially if you want it to run efficiently.

Unlike most other problems in life, technical problems can often be solved (or at least rendered insignificant) by throwing money or resources at them.

U can get 4gb of ram for approx $80 now, so if you can u might as well take the 4gb! just my opinion...

Yes, RAM is very cheap nowadays, and even if you can't use the full 4GB with your 32-bit windows, you'll probably end up installing a 64-bit OS in the future.

I'm going to be in the market for 4gb of RAM (possibly, anyway), and the cheapest I've seen it on NewEgg (and so far, that's the cheapest I've seen all around) is ~$135 for 2x2gb set, or if I want to deal with mail orders, I can get two 2gb chips separate for ~$50 each after mail-in rebates.
Mind giving the frugal a push in the direction you're in? -
I wouldn't buy a computer today with less than 2gigs...it's just not practical. Some places are advertising systems with 1gig to keep the prices low, and if you're really strapped for cash, 1gig will do. But if you can afford to get the same setup with 2gigs and it's only $50 more, it's worth it.

I have 2GB in my dv6500t running Vista Premium 32-bit and I'm concerned it's not enough...
When I go to the Windows Task Manager, this is what I get for Physical Memory (MB):
Total = 2045
Cached = 1127
Free = 18
Is this a problem that only 18MB is free? Would the same thing happen if I installed 4GB (showing ~3GB for 32-bit) or would it show more free memory?
This is from the HP manual:
nVidia Discrete PCI Express x16 Graphics
nVidia NB8M-SE -GS with 128-MB of dedicated video memory (16M × 16 DDR2 × 4 PCs) with:
● 192 MB of video memory on computer models with 512-MB system random access memory (RAM) (128-MB + 64-MB Turbo Cache)
● 383 MB of video memory on computer models with 1-GB system RAM (128-MB + 255-MB Turbo Cache)
● 895 MB of video memory on computer models with 2-GB system RAM (128-MB + 767-MB Turbo Cache)
● 1919 MB of video memory on computer models with 4-GB system RAM (128-MB + 1535-MB Turbo Cache) -
It's called SuperFetch. Vista, unlike XP, uses all available memory since unused memory is wasted memory. Vista tries to improve performance by filling memory with programs it thinks you will use next. It doesn't matter if you had 512MB or 4GB, you will always notice there isn't much free memory in Vista.
