or if you feel comfortable enough, you can always reset the laptop back to factory since you really haven't used it. -
If its spyware, you can't go wrong with Ad-Aware.

I doubt its spyware/ad-aware thats causing your problem though. -
you never know now a days....
lava soft is good, but their scans take for ever. i use them in conjunction with xoftspy. since xoftspy detects what lava soft doesn't. and vice versa, but when cleaning infected pc's, i use about 6 different kinds -
Have you downloaded the latest patches and fixes from windows update? I recommend doing this

this can also be due to a faulty program that refuses to close itself on shutdown. most probably a firefox addon if you are using firefox. (u told u only use it for websurfing). Try uninstalling and reinstalling the addons for firefox.
Also use the taskmanager (right click on taskbar >> task manager) with full view of processes (processes >> tick 'show processes from all users') to monitor processes just before shutting down. manually close all suspicious processes (especially if u see iexplore.exe or firefox.exe lingering still after u closed the browser). the shut down the system. also make sure that no disk is there in your optical drive during shut down -
