very sorry if this question has been asked before I have looked in this forum with no luck.I purchased a hp pavilion dv 9000 laptop at christmas. So far i have only installed avg virus protection nothing else and used it for surfing the internet. But about every 5th or 6th time you shut it down it just hangs on the logging off screen.i have left it for up to half an hour so far but with no joy either the battery will run out or i have to hold the power swithch down to shut the thing dowm. Then getting a black screen on start up saying that the pc was shut down incorrectly.Any help would be gratefully appreciated

i would not know were to start. And what would that tell me anyway?.This is my frist laptop. Not impressed so far but i think thats more because of vista and the not shutting down problem.Would not mind having problems if i had been messing about with it but its only been used for about 2 hours so far taking longer to shut the thing down

hopefully it will give you an idea of what is stopping it from shutting down. and the other thing it could be is... spyware/adware

or if you feel comfortable enough, you can always reset the laptop back to factory since you really haven't used it.

you never know now a days....

lava soft is good, but their scans take for ever. i use them in conjunction with xoftspy. since xoftspy detects what lava soft doesn't. and vice versa, but when cleaning infected pc's, i use about 6 different kinds :)

this can also be due to a faulty program that refuses to close itself on shutdown. most probably a firefox addon if you are using firefox. (u told u only use it for websurfing). Try uninstalling and reinstalling the addons for firefox.
Also use the taskmanager (right click on taskbar >> task manager) with full view of processes (processes >> tick 'show processes from all users') to monitor processes just before shutting down. manually close all suspicious processes (especially if u see iexplore.exe or firefox.exe lingering still after u closed the browser). the shut down the system. also make sure that no disk is there in your optical drive during shut down
