Hi, I just purchase a new HP Pavilion dv5 yesterday. Today I started playing around with it and in the meantime managed to do something wrong I guess. There is a touch volume on the computer and it wasn't working very well so i kept running my finger over it a bunch of times, ever since then the black volume box keeps pooping up on the screen and if I use the volume from the start bar in the corner the volume is like twitching and making a clicking noise. my actual computer is not making the noise because if i mute the volume i don't hear anything.

what is going on? this is really annoying me and i don't know what i did. i can't listen to music or anything because of the clicks it's like the volume has gone crazy. any idea how to fix this?

It's the first day I've had this, i'm starting to get worried that i'm having a problem already...it may seem silly but you cant even read a webpage when the volume thing pops up in the middle randomly.

    thanks for your help!

Sounds like quite possibly a hardware problem with the capacitive volume slider.

Yeah it could be. I would definitely try re-installing drivers first, and calling tech support before any repair action though. Good luck with this one.

I received my HP Pavilion DV5z a week ago and have the exact same issue. If you just touch the volume slider it starts to click. If you swipe your finger along the scale it will click repeatedly for several minutes. It sounds almost like a geiger counter and nothing will make it stop. Also, I too have the black volume box popping up on the screen over and over. I think the touch button is faulty. If others are having the same issue it may be a problem with the technology itself or the design. I am calling HP today to see if I can get more information.

Otherwise the laptop has run just great. It is hotter than my Dell Inspiron 1420 and the fan clearly clicks on more often but doesn't appear to be overheating. The screen is beautiful which is the main reason I bought it. This is my first HP as I'm a loyal Dell fan but thought the screen would be a benefit to my digital photography hobby.

Dell Inspiron 1420, Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 1.83 Ghz processor, Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit),

HP Pavilion DV5z AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual Core ZM-80(2.1 Ghz) processor, Windows Vista Home Premium
(32 bit), 15.4 WXGA High Definition widescreen display, ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics, 3 DDR2 memory, 160GB SATA 5400 rpm hard drive, 802.11b/g WLAN wireless, LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW, 6 cell battery, HP Imprint Finish (Mesh) + Microphone + Webcam

Issue solved! I just called HP tech support. After being on the phone for about an hour we figured out it was the touch button driver. He uninstalled them and reinstalled with one downloaded from the HP web site. Works great now! No extra clicking...no random pop-ups of the volume screen. Glad it didn't need to be sent in for repair.

Cool! Glad you got it working and I'm sure its a big relief that you don't have to send it in! Hopefully the OP will be blessed with the same fate.

Do you have a link to these drivers? I have the same issue on my 9700t. I figured it had something to do with the drivers as it works perfectly in Linux.

Hey can you please tell us the exact thing you did regarding the driver downloads? I'm having the same problem and I have to restart just to get rid of the problem. I would call HP support, but here in the Philippines they don't know what they are doing. Please help!

I've tried to fix this issue on the dv5z by uninstalling the quicktouch drivers, rebooting and reinstalling the new drivers. Runs fine for a while then starts acting up again. Daughter is going off to school with it disabled as it just doesn't work. Anyone have a permanent solution for this? I went through support and they were supposed to escalate but never heard anything back (other than an automated note asking how the support was).

Purchased the dv5 1055tx 5 days ago. The volume control slider started clicking (sounds like a gieger counter) after 2 days. Contacted HP (in the Phillipines) and followed their instructions to reload audio and bios drivers.
The issue resolved itself for 24 hours then started again. I will be getting a full refund tomorrow and selecting another notebook.

It's a known heat issue, please search the forums it's been discussed plenty of times. Try pressing the stop button it usually resolves it, but this issue is with almost all of the quicktouch buttons.

I've faced this issue, the first time I logged off and it worked again, the other time while I'm in game and it was terminated when I logged off, I dont know if the driver you've talked about is an update to the original one!? Can please you tell which (& How to) driver to uninstall and install again?

I have a dv5-1002 nr. I've spoken with HP re: this problem 4 times. Have updated QuickLaunch and Quicktouch drivers, have updated the bios and have uninstalled and reinstalled Quicklauch and Quicktouch software. Still have same problem. After reading that overheating causes the volume issues, I tested the theory. When my notebook started to overheat, I adjusted the volume using the Quicktouch slider bar and I was able to recreate the problem. I then placed my computer on top of box fan that I placed flat on the floor. After 5 min. my computer cooled, and the volume problem disappeared along with the black box volume indicator that appeared in the middle of the screen. I'm sending my computer in to HP for "repairs". However, if this is a design flaw, I may be in trouble. I've had this notebook for only 3 mos. Will post the repairs they made when I get my notebook back.

Pressing the stop button usually stops this (though this is just a workaround, it doesn't solve the problem!).

I usually just end the the HPKBDAPP.exe process in task mgr. to prevent the volume indicator from popping up. Thanks for the tip.

hello all. i lost hours trying to resolve this issue. called the technical help line, followed many of the suggestions posted in the forums, on and on.

as a joke i decided to thoroughly clean the button area to see if it made a difference, THAT WAS IT!!!!

after hours on the technical help line, uninstalling, re-installing, updating drivers, rolling back to different restore points, checking bios settings, ETC, they told me the only step left was to do a complete system recovery!!!

blow it all away and re-install everything!!!! there was no way i was going to do that with a 1 week old laptop.

in a fit of frustration i joked that the touch sensor was probably just dirty. i grabbed a clean dish cloth and wiped back a forth gently but thoroughly.

    THAT WAS IT!

IT STOPPED IMMEDIATELY AND HAS NOT STARTED AGAIN!

THIS WAS WEEKS AGO AND THE ISSUE HAS NOT COME BACK!

I had the same problem over and over.did the whole system recovery, downloaded this and that ect and the problem was fixed for a few days. Had the computer sent to Hp for repair and was good for a few months then we are back where we started.

Within the first week i wanted a refund but was assured that if i did this and that,(downloading) that all would be fine. When it wasn't i couldn't get a refund because it was now past 14 days. How nice for them.
The computer was in repair for 12 days (after been told it was going to take 3-5 working days) then i had to call then to find out when the comp was coming back.

Hp are aware that this is a fault as this was told to me on the very first phone call i made "Yes, this a common problem with this laptop" yet assure people that once fixed then there will be no more problems, and just by reading these posts that its a huge problem being ignored, pull your head out HP!!!

    Hi everybody,

    I own a DV 3000 (DV3525 to be exact)

I had a volume problem with it :

When I close the screen while the mute is off (playing music or just idling) the volume didn't stop going up and down doing the geiger sound....

Quite exhausting.... I cure it by turning the mute on, this is not a good solution when I want to listen to music at the same time....

I read the post here, did the update of the Bios, audio drivers and quick touch, it didn't help.

Then I read the post about cleaning the sensitive keyboard; I cleaned mine and found out that just spraying the cleaning product on it (something special to clean flat screens) it turn the volume up and down and also turn on and of the mute and quick launch menu....

    Very, very sensitive !

Then I cleaned it and found out that a part of my screen is actually touching the surface (it is scratched just under the volume bar)

Now, when I close my screen very nice and slow it does not do it again....

If I close it without any care it does it right away....

I was a little concerned in buying an HP laptop since two friends had a lot of trouble with theirs (recent history) and didn't stop from new until now...

I had some other HP in the past, quality is very, very down with HP now.

Every new buyer should be aware of it !

This sensitive keyboard is a perfect example (bad adjustment of the screen/main body of the laptop)

    Hope this helps !

And thanks everyone to share their experiences and help solve the problems.

Greetings to every HP customer. I am the extremely unsatisfied owner of an HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx Entertainment Notebook PC. I have had this laptop since March. It is fast and, despite the bulky battery everyone complaints of, has a great battery life. Nevertheless, I have been very close to throw it through my window lately. The problem is an intermittent issue where the volume up/down function launches unexpectedly in the middle of anything you might be doing (watching a video, working in a text document, etc.). I have done A GREAT DEAL of research and read a lot of forums without finding the definite solution. I am up to date with updates (save redundancy). I have installed every single driver update for every single component (BIOS [version F.21] as well), including the WinFlash for Hp Notebook Multimedia Button Board Firmware (ROM) version 25 which is supposed to address this problem. This notebook runs Windows Vista 64bit version. I performed a clean reinstall and had no problems for a month or two, then after using the pc for an hour or so the volume function launches unexpectedly and appears in the middle of the screen and then disappears, and after a few seconds appears again. When this thing happens you cannot type in case you are writing a text, and if you are using the mouse pad you can still move the pointer on the screen but you cannot select objects, double-tap items or open files. If you turn off your computer and then turn it back on, though the volume function works okay the mouse pad problem persists. I have also done a hard shut down where you shut down your computer, remove the battery and also the CMOS battery, then press the power button to discharge any current left in the pc circuitry, wait a few minutes, put everything back on and turn on the computer. This just solves the problem for a few days. So, I would like to know if other people with this laptop model that have experienced this annoying issue have found a truly solution. I also considered moving into Windows XP, but why should I do that? Let us allow HP to stand up for their products and give real support instead of customers sort out HP chaos. Best regards.

very easy fix to get rid of the click sound when you use the slide touch volume with your finger

    1. right click the speaker icon in the bottom right next to the clock.
    2. open volume mixer
    3. scroll to the right
    4. you will see a volume control for "quick launch buttons"
    5. adjust or mute

    no more clicking sound
