Greetings to every HP customer. I am the extremely unsatisfied owner of an HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx Entertainment Notebook PC. I have had this laptop since March. It is fast and, despite the bulky battery everyone complaints of, has a great battery life. Nevertheless, I have been very close to throw it through my window lately. The problem is an intermittent issue where the volume up/down function launches unexpectedly in the middle of anything you might be doing (watching a video, working in a text document, etc.). I have done A GREAT DEAL of research and read a lot of forums without finding the definite solution. I am up to date with updates (save redundancy). I have installed every single driver update for every single component (BIOS [version F.21] as well), including the WinFlash for Hp Notebook Multimedia Button Board Firmware (ROM) version 25 which is supposed to address this problem. This notebook runs Windows Vista 64bit version. I performed a clean reinstall and had no problems for a month or two, then after using the pc for an hour or so the volume function launches unexpectedly and appears in the middle of the screen and then disappears, and after a few seconds appears again. When this thing happens you cannot type in case you are writing a text, and if you are using the mouse pad you can still move the pointer on the screen but you cannot select objects, double-tap items or open files. If you turn off your computer and then turn it back on, though the volume function works okay the mouse pad problem persists. I have also done a hard shut down where you shut down your computer, remove the battery and also the CMOS battery, then press the power button to discharge any current left in the pc circuitry, wait a few minutes, put everything back on and turn on the computer. This just solves the problem for a few days. So, I would like to know if other people with this laptop model that have experienced this annoying issue have found a truly solution. I also considered moving into Windows XP, but why should I do that? Let us allow HP to stand up for their products and give real support instead of customers sort out HP chaos. Best regards.

Uninstall HP QuickTouch and HP QuickLaunch Buttons driver and use the program in my signature to manage them. If the multimedia button board is bad, it will still change the volume randomly, but it won't kill your touchpad anymore.

Brother, it din't help. Thanks anyway. I have seen on the internet A LOT of people with HP laptops complaining about this very issue with the volume slider, no matter the model or the year. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND how they cannot fix this bug. How long will it take, a decade maybe? I cannot open my laptop and this thing shows up in the middle of the screen. Maybe if I open the case will find something bent as you did on your mouse pad.

If you’ve done a fresh OS install, removed and/or updated drivers, and have done the button board firmware update with no resolution, I would backup all my data and send it to HP for repair. Since you’ve only had the unit since March, I would not pull it apart and take the chance of damaging anything. Let HP fix it.

Keep good records and if they send it back and it still does it, send it back again. If it still does it, call a HP case manager before the 3rd attempt and they will likely replace the unit for you. Provided that is, you haven’t pulled it apart and damaged the unit.

Time is running short though, so if you decide on that route you'd best get to it.
