What do you guys feel about the hp warranties. I just ordered a dv4000 and I will be carrying it around some of the time. I have never had a laptop before or ordered anything from hp so I am unsure of what if any warranty/accidental damage protection to buy. Please don't just say get this and that, tell me why please. Thanks in advance

Everything I've read says to just get the standard warranty and put the money aside toward purchase of your next system. Buy the PC with a major platnum card and the 1 year warranty is doubled (at no cost to you) by the card company. That having been said, I just bought a new Dv4000 and I chose a full 3 year with accedental damage protection. I'm a bit of a clutz and I will be traveling extensively with the machine. If the thing goes overboard from off my boat, or gets run over by a truck or falls of my roof it's covered...so long as it is recovered and sent back to the factory.

If you have bad hardware it is most likely to come to light within the first year, not to say something can't happen after. You are better off taking out a rider on your homeowner/renters insurance which will cover the more likely accidents and theft. If it gives you piece of mind it may be worth it. HP's extened warranties are some of the more expensive ones. Good Luck.

I had to send back my DV1000 due to a fan problem. They were pretty quick in fixing it and sending it back. I was pleased with the warranty support for this in-warranty defect. As someone already said, check the terms and conditions for your Gold or Platinum Visa or MasterCard. Many will double the 1 year factory warranty to 2 years, and some will even throw in coverage for theft or damage for 90 days. Check your card agreement. My MasterCard covers theft for 90 days but my Visa does NOT. This is one case where MasterCard and Visa are NOT identical.
HP charges $99 to extend the warranty for another year, and you can buy it any time during the valid period of the 1 year factory warranty. You DON'T have to buy it at the same time you buy the system. So you may not have to decide right away. Another option if you bought it somewhere like Staples is a store warranty. Theirs is pretty good and actually covers normal wear & tear and other stuff. They price it depending on what the initial purchase price is though. -
Regarding home owners insurance, I checked with my carrier and found that a rider covering replacement value with no deductable would cost more than buying the insurance through HP. In checking around by the best deal I found was at Sam's Club (best by FAR)... I was very surprised they had such a good deal, and they have favorable return policies. Of course you need to purchase a pre-configured machine.

That is interesting. My was I think $38 a year, could be wrong. If you are buying a HP might want to consider HPShopping. You can configure it the way you want and won't have to pay tax like at Sam's Club. Maine and Jamaica, that is two different locales?

Isn't there tax in some states. I can't find it on the site, I havn't been there lately but my parents want to know every detail before I put money on credit.

If you have a AmEx card, it will increase the exact type of warranty the item has by one year up to five years. This means that if you by an extended warranty that gives you more coverage(free shipping...) than the standard one year warranty, AmEx will give you one more year of the extended and enhanced warranty.
I am waiting now for a new dv4000 from hpshopping.com that I bought the 3year extended warranty for. I will have one more year with its enhanced warrany features.

Do you know where it says on the site? About sales tax that is.

When you get ready to buy just click calculate shipping and tax.
