I would go with Seagate, hands-down. Very reliable, quiet, cool, and takes it easy on battey life. All the things you would expect from an excellent 2.5" HD. The Seagate 5400RPM drives use virtually the same power as a regular 4200RPM drive, very impressive. What sets Seagate way ahead of the crowd is its standard five year warranty. Want peace of mind? Go with Seagate.

I have a NX6125 and the drive that came with it is a Hitachi 5400 rpm drive. Quiet and does not get hot at all. Mobile Meter shows that it ususally operates at 35C. Hottest I ever saw it is 40C but room temp was a very hot 30C.

I like both Seagate and Hitachi, slightly favoring Seagate. If you want a 7200RPM drive, those are the only two companies that make them. 5400's are a lot less expensive though, higher latency but about the same throughput as 7200's. My dv8000z came with a pair of Seagate 80GB 5400.2's (yay!).

There are no generic hard drives or they arent really popular for anybody to use them. HP uses different drives from different manufacturers. There is no standard brand that they use.

From what I've seen/read HP uses Seagate, Hitachi, and Toshiba, the last being the worst.

Don't forget HP also uses Samsung harddrives. Some of the V2000Z/L2000 came with Samsung. Those run hot.

I'm not sure if they use Samsung in business laptops.

D***it, I have the Toshiba. Is it really that bad? I know it's slow, but it doesn't get really hot or eat batteries.

Hmm, you are forgetting Fujitsu!! That is what came with my laptop.

So, it looks they use pretty much all the brands, like Seagate, Hitachi, Toshiba, Samsung, Fujitsu. Am I missing any other brand other than WD, a late comer.

Thanks for the complements. So to summarize, from what I've seen/read HP does not use WD :).
Yet, I still hold that Toshibas are the worst piece of luck you can have with HP. Mine is Toshiba and I feel it's slower than other 5400 rpm drives, as well as hotter (unless this is a consequence of having only 512 RAM).

Having only 512MB RAM is definitely causing Windows to hit virtual memory much more often than you'd like. Buy more.
