Re-install the OS. I think it runs best that way.

I removed nothing. Business ones thankfully come minimal, and let you choose what garbage to install.

well, if you aren't a tech guy, and you are not comfortable with re-installing the Operaiting System, then you should look at all of the software on the machine and see which ones you will not use. Make a list of them. Then go into Control Panel, and go to Programs and Features. Once in there, go through the list of programs you made that you will not use and uninstall them. Make sure to restart after each one you uninstall. I hope that helps. Good Luck.

or ask a friend. what you want to do it pretty easy for someone with the 'knowledge' but potentially disastrous for someone who doesn't.

I got rid of everything. Right now, I'm running XP on both my HP desktop and notebook. Seems to run better that way.

Removed everything that was not essential. Or rather, didn't install it to begin with. Of course, essential is relative.

Here's a word of caution --- Whatever files or apps you do decide to delete, just delete them one at a time, and let a day or two go by before you delete the next one. That way, if you delete something that your system requires, you will know exactly which file or app you have to reinstall. I do the same things with updates --- I have learned the hard way, to only download no more than one update a day, so that if they ever harm my system (which they occasionally do) I, at least, know which one was the culprit!

Yes, it is. So until you know what you want and can do without, it's best not to do anything. As for what's garbage? Well, you know the old saying, one mans garbage....
That's good advice although you may need more than a day to determine the positive or negative results. Still, you left out the most important first step: make a copy of everything! That's the best way to safeguard against unforeseen mistakes and mishaps.
Mediasmart may be redundant, but only if you already have Home
    Premium
or above. I'll hold off on deleting anything until an alternative is up and safely operating.

I did a clean OS install too. If you're comfortable enough with computers to do a little messing around while guided by a set of instructions, there are some good guides on how to do that around the forum. I'd recommend it, it'll clean out all the crap and leave you free to install only what you're going to use.

Do make your backup discs before you do ANYTHING, though. That's your easy undo incase you mess up. (You can order a set from HP if you forget, but it'll cost you $20 or so.)
