what is the general consensus on where to install new program files, such as itunes?
do folks just let windows pick?
or
do you create a new "personal" program files folder?
is there a performance advantage to either method?
Thanks!

Not sure what kind of hard drive you have, but it's usually best to keep your programs and Windows files on a separate partition from your documents, music and video files. I believe this helps preserve the disk performance for the partition with your program files, as the other partition will require more defragmentation if large files are being written and erased frequently.

There are always two camps on this issue. With the performance of todays computers and HDD's my take is to just let windows decide where the program files will be installed. You still can control where your data files will be stored via the options in the program. I think the KISS principle is best in todays environment (Keep It Simple S...).
If you decide to create another partition, eventually you will have program files and most likely data installed on both partitions if you are not absolutely on top of your installations and file housekeeping.

I leave downloads in "my downloads", and important downloads and active files on the desktop.
