ok so im just about to buy 2 gbs of ram, and just wondering, scince i have a compaq v3000Z and a GeForce Go 6150, will applications such as adobe primere and sony vegas run faster? or load faster? or does that have to do with the hard drive? what about gaming? will they load faster, be able to put graphics on High, and without lag?

planning on getting g.skills on newegg, good reviews and only 119$

I just put the 2GB PC5300 G.Skill kit ($119 @ Newegg) into a DV9000t, which I purchased stripped down with only one 512MB stick. Works great and nice boost in speed.

Loading largely has to do with HDD speed--an upgrade to a 7200 RPM hard drive will help in that case.

Games will largely be limited by the GPU. RAM always will help with large files in editing programs etc..

You will def. see an improvement with 2GB of memory, but I don't think it will help with games or loading times.

How much memory do you have installed currently? If 512 you will notice quite a jump. Are you running Vista or XP?

G.Skill is a good brand; you should not have any problems with it.

You might want to start putting a little more thought into the title of your threads. Very misleading.

Apps may not RUN faster, but you will be able to have more apps open without your computer slowing down.

App start up time will be increased as well.

Basically, adding more ram will make the computer a lot more "smooth" and you'll never have to worry about having too many apps open and it'll allow you to multi task with ease since the ram will allow you to run all your programs.

Gaming will see some improvement, not a whole lot, but it will improve.

Programs like Adobe and stuff will greatly benefit by more ram as well.

Slight difference which will only be noticable in memory benchmarks. DDR2 667 memories usually tend to have higher latencies which dampens the effect of the increased clock speed.

FYI, newegg lists the 1GB Gskill memory as In Stock at the time of this post...

    Semantics.

    667MHz X 8=5336.

Some manufacturers round up to 5400, some round down to 5300.

Well, as others have said, every component plays a role. A faster hard drive would make a difference, a faster processor would make a difference, etc.

But, with Vista, 2 GB is the "sweet spot" for performance. It does an excellent job a pre-fetching data from the hard drive to the memory before you need it in many cases, making things much "snappier." Also, with programs like Premiere, the more memory you can throw at them the better. Being able to store data in memory instead of using "scratch disk" space while applying filters or edits, etc. makes a HUGE difference in performance for those apps.

Anyway, if you can get a deal, go for it!

I would like to know what is the difference between putting new bigger chip of ram in lappy and increasing the ram by using the feature of win vista where a pen drive can act as ram.

Readyboost is not a substitute for more RAM. It helps in boot up and in some limited circumstances. Read this article for benchmarks using Readyboost...
    http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=2917&p=6

Also, the recommended amount of memory to use for ReadyBoost is one to three times the amount of RAM present.
