Rumor has it that the HDX will become a line to compete with Dell's premium XPS line. (and here I thought the Pavillions did just that.) Meaning 15" and 17", possible 18.4" HDX's. As for the 20" Dragon, if there is going to be one, look for it in August maybe? A lot has happened that suggest that this might be the "Last Dragon."

For instance, in MAY, HP gave away 31 fully loaded - paying tax and shipping - of them in a web wide contest. (Can you say writedown?)

The price since inception in June '07 dropped about 50%, be it base price or fully configured. Usually a sign of discontinuation in HP land.

At the HP "Connect Your World" conference in Berlin in early June, the entirety of HP's new Montevina line up was unveiled with the HDX missing from it.

The prior month at a show in Taiwan, where many manufacturers brought out their new wares, HP bought out the Dragon.

So It doesn't look good for an updated HDX. But you never know. At the current prices it's a serious bargain. If you bought a week or two ago when there were $450 and $500 off coupons, it was a steal. (Looks over should for the cops) ;)

There should be 16" and 18/20" HDX refreshes.

They also have released the HDX9494NR which is $1599 at a number of brick and mortar AND internet sites.

    Bestbuy, Circuit city, FRY's, J&R, B&H, Newegg

If you configured the same machine (4GB, 320HDD, Bluray, Wireless a/b/g/n, 8800M GTS, system disk) on the HP website it would cost you $2083. I tried on a few occasions to get them to configure me one with a 1920*1200 screen(+$350) based on the 1599 HDX9494 price. They wouldn't do it . One person said that these companies were selling them(HDX9494NR) at a loss. This leads me to believe that they had a certain amount of projected parts they had to get rid of. This is a means of minimizing losses with a giveaway to seed the process with the publicity it created.

Also, one of the configurations people looked up the part number for the HDX9494NR in their inventory database and told me they were out of stock.

To me it seems like they have not had much luck with this class of machine. However the numbers say that the sale of 'laptops' is approaching that of desktops. Maybe this is a laptop step too far. One can buy a smaller laptop and get a bigger, seperate LCD screen for much less than the original cost of these beasts. You could then have better portability AND a bigger screen when you get home.

    Oh, BTW!!!

I want one, but can't decide to get one now or gamble and wait and see if they do a montevina upgrade.

Question: Are the processors pin compatible?
Question2: Is the curent motherboard capable of 1066fsb, all the current processors offered are only 800fsb?

If they need a new MB, I can see the price being higher. If that is part of the refresh then why not the faster graphics also. Is that why they are "giving away" the Nvidia 8800M GTS.

because of all of these reasons they probably won't 'announce' until current HDX9494NR inventory from retailers is gone.

Q1: Yes. (Montevina still uses socket P like Santa Rosa.)
Q2: No. (The new Penryns will downclock to 800mhz from 1066 when used in Santa Rosa platform.)

The gamble is simple. A new unit, if there is going to be one, will cost a lot more than the current sale prices with -$200 stackable coupon (code:NB3408). A new unit's performance will probably only be 10-12% faster than an equivalent current unit. Worse still, a laptop of this size may be handed over to VoodooPC to market given Voodoo's notorious price premium which HP originally wanted for the HDX.

Also, HDX has already become a "line" as predicted. There is now an HDX desktop.

Go to HP's support site and type in HDX.
