If your laptop doesn't come with Windows 7 pre-installed, then there's no Windows 7 key on the bottom which you can use.

Otherwise, the Windows 7 installed is OEM, which means you need an OEM Windows 7 disc for re-installation. The HP Upgrade kit contains an OEM Windows 7 installation.

As it was with Vista, also all Windows 7 installation discs are both OEM and Retail compatible. You can install OEM license from Retail disc and vice versa.

Also it is possible to install Ultimate from Basic disc or Home from Professional disc, the key you use during installation defines what version is installed.

Now only thing to worry is finding correct language install disc :) This is a big step from the ancient WinXP times.

I am sure you know the dark side as well not sure if you succumbed it it though as it is so attractive.
Currently I am still not sure how the "upgrade disc" is going to activate it.
Does it use OEM activation or a unique key is given?
Based on my analysis I would say no currently
