I am using HP 2530P at home and connect to wireless access point for accessing the internet services. Recently, I found my wireless connection icon in the system tray are shown incorrecly. actually the wireless controller card is conencting to the wireless router and no problem to connect to the external network (Internet), but the connection icon in system tray indicate the connection is disconnected like below. I am no sure it is a window vista problem or my HP notebook problem. I would be appreciated if someone could have an advice. Thanks.

Reboot your computer. Or uninstall and reinstall network adapter driver.

Im looking at this and I could be wrong but i think your looking at the wrong icon.

Your computer has 2 network adapters and one of them is ethernet and the icon for that one is showing disconnected. I see another icon the second from the left that looks just like w ireless icon and it is showing connected.

Unfortunately im on xp for the moment so i cant double check the icons as they are different.

Jordan, I believe you’re correct. There should not be an X on the Network & Sharing icon (far right) if you are successfully connected to a wireless network. The other icon the folks here are talking about (2nd from left) is the HP Wireless Assistant icon. The indication you have means that, for whatever reason, Network & Sharing control is being provided an input that indicates that your Wifi is turned off via the Wireless Assistant even though your Wifi device is enabled and connected.

You may be able to correct this by uninstalling the Wireless assistant, reboot, then reinstalling the Wireless Assistant. You shouldn’t need to enable or disable through the device manager because obviously Wifi is enabled and working. If that doesn’t work for you then, as Opti said, with the Wireless Assistant indicting all “ON”, uninstall the Wifi device via device manager, reboot, then reinstall the Wifi driver.

FYI… you will also get a little red X next to the HP Wireless Assistant icon if all wireless devices are disabled via the assistant (i.e. Wifi & BT).

    Good luck….

No, it is the Ethernet port connection icon, wired internet.

Sorry, but is an internet connection icon. As long as you have one or the other (Wifi or Wired).... there will be no X. I am currently on a laptop with the NIC disabled.... no X. If I enable the NIC..... no X. Reason.... because I am connected via Wifi.

    Try it out.... ; )

MajorDave is right about the wireless assistant icon, i forgot thats what it is. However I have still had machines with multiple adapters with an icon for each.

In fact thinking really hard I do remember my Compaq used the same icon for both adapters on vista, it must be 2000 Advanced Server that had the icon for each adapter.

I think it was an option on some versions of windows as well to show icon for each or none at all?

Perhaps I made a bad assumption, but I am assuming Vista. But Clutch.... I think you're write about multiple icons.... Win 2000 perhaps with a dialup LOL ... but, like you, somewhere along the road I remember seeing icons for both Wifi and a NIC. They acted spererately. $@ll, I guess that's what happens when ya get old. At-any-rate in Vista, as long as you've got internet (no matter how) the X goes away.

Jordan somehow got his wires crossed with the Wireless Assistant. Either a device driver upgrade (perhaps via windows update), or turning one off while the other is saying "ON". This happens sometimes...

Either way.... I just hope we can get Jordan squared away.
