I went through three HP's before giving up. Good luck with Dell, however, read the forums and see if it looks better (lots of complaints). There are lots of Dells considering HP's.

I've had my zd8000 for over 2 years now - NO problems whatsoever. And bear in mind that this is a 3.06ghx HT desktop processor. Can you say HOT?

And its even shut down on me a few times because of overheating - I let it cool down and it fires right back up.

    Some other things...

I smoke.... which is bad for computers... no problems...

None of the keys have faded - though I did once accidently catch one on my fingernail.. a bit o' super glue fixed that!

THe screen is still perfect - no dead pixels.. and people have an annoying habit of touching it with their oily fingers (why do people feel the need to touch the moniter with pointing something out on the screen....its not really there... its just an image....)

Its only had one good cleaning since I've owned it......Except for the moniter - which I clean religiously.

Everyone has problems... just read reviews of alienware's customer service - and they're paying a lot more for their machines. I think HP meets an exceptional price/quality point.

    Indian support is annoying though!

I have no problems with my dv2500t. I am very happy with it. Keep in mind that people who are happy with their notebooks wouldn't bother to post.

The nice thing about HP is that they post service guides for their notebooks so it's relatively easy for non-HP techs to upgrade them. I had lots of fun refurbishing a broken, low-end V2000z into a pretty nice machine. I'm much more hesitant to mess with notebooks from other vendors due to their lack of documentation.

Forums are made for complaining about things, every forum you go into there will be people saying something about their notebook.

Just buy whatever you feel best suits you. If you need help just read reviews about it and decide on those instead of other people.

I always bounce back between Dell and HP...basically I purchase from the person who didn't tick me off last :D

Anyway, HP (at least for me) has either (1) stood by their warranty and fixed things or (2) replaced my laptop. Every time. And for that, I like HP...now if only there were not problems to start with :)

My first HP melted part of its own motherboard.
    Sold the second 17" one.
This one (nc8430) has had the optical drive replaced three times, and the screen once. The screen needs a 2nd replacement...and I need to purchase a protective case for this notebook :p. But every time HP has hooked me up with the parts I needed.

Got my nc8430 almost a year ago for school and haven't really posted on NBR since then because I really have had nothing to complain about. Shouldn't have upgraded to Vista though, but that's my mistake =/ I love my HP.

I've had my L2000 for 2 years, no problems. I got what I paid for. Now I'm buying a sub-700$ dv6000z (back to university after 2.5 years...) and hope for the same.

I use an HP nc6400 for work. Had it for over a year now. Not a single problem with this machine. I recently purchased a dv9207us for $800 after MIR from CompUsa as a desktop replacement. The only issue I have is the famous high pitch noise - fortunately on my machine it's hardly noticeable - only when you put your ear near the keyboard will the sound be audible.

So overall HP's been good...knock on wood!

Only problems I've had so far with my dv9000t have been Vista related, and now XP Pro related (but those are my fault, and very minor in comparison).

Vista even worked for me, for the most part. But XP is doing things better. Waiting until SP1 FTW! :p

i havent had any problem with my notebook so far. and i have dropped mine twice! ive had mine since january. i would not really go with dell because my cousin and and a friend of mine both have dells and one of them has an xps and the "chrome" trim around the touchpad started to chip away, and the touchpad itself feels like its just covered with some cheap leather cloth, but trust me i like the look of the xps but im just not satisfied with the build quality. and the inspiron well compared to most hp and compaq models the screens are much thicker, and most new hp and compaqs have no latch unlike dell so if you get a dell and the latch breaks your screwed. but if you still insist on a dell thats up to you

I've lost count on how many HP consumer notebooks I've had, and the only issue I ever recall was a bum power adapter on a refurb (which I'm typing on right now).

As for build quality, I guess that is subjective. The previous generation HPs (5000 series) had a very blocky & untrendy look, but there was much less flex in the chassis than the current 6000 series notebooks (IMO). Others have said the exact opposite........

I was kind of hesitant to register on this forum at first because I was reading some of the threads and so many people on this particular board had problems with their HPs. I've owned HP products since 2002 (when I bought a Jordana Pocket PC) and I have never EVER had any trouble with any of the products I've purchased. In my experience, HP usually has some of the best prices versus specs on prebuilt desktops and they usually offer solid competition for Dell (Who I must admit, can turn out some pretty swanky notebooks) on the laptop front.

However, I do normally get an in-store warranty so when I have had technical difficulties (the only problem I've had recently is when my old Compaq desktop decided to shatter one of my game CDs) I usually don't have to deal with HP support.

Very rarely will anyone come to a forum to rave about how good their laptop is; most complain to rant and complain. But I'll take this opportunity to tell you all how good my DV6000 is....it's undoubtedly the best machine I've used. I'd have no hesitations in buying another HP laptop.

thank you. yes i have been reading a lot of reviews. I have been on the computer for a week trying to decide between HP and Dell. In the Dell forums a lot of poeple usually post when they get their notebooks post pictures and mini reviews and how much they like thier new lappy. I know that Zcott but I just need to know i am making the right choice. Most of what i've heard about with HP..not to much Compaq models..but HP overheating..and the high pitched noise..so far in the Dell (in the lil mini reviews people leave) forums i've hardly heard of any of those two problems. right now it looks like HP and Dell are competing in the laptop market ..but who has the top spot. While Dell got shopper's choice of the year and other awards of 2007. Also we got our dell desktop free through the VA (veterans affairs) so what does that mean? that the government uses Dell for their computers, at least the one (the VA) here does. While i know everyone is going to have complaints or really good experience i was just asking for a lil more help from actual users. I'll be going to Best Buy today to see what they all have for HP/compaq and ask CSR about them. thanks anyways all

I've had a zv6000 for 2 years with absolutely no problems so far. My dad now has that and its working great. I now have a dv2500t and no issues so far other than Vista. But thats not really HP's fault. Its the OS itself.

Well, I bought a preconfigured dv6000z and compared to my old Sony VAIO PCG-K23 it has hardly any heat or fan noise at all, so I love it :D

I really like Dell products. They are clean, professional, and generally don't have very many frills. I have to admit that before picking up my HP I was SORELY tempted by that Dell Vostro 1400. Dell usually has some great coupons and discounts too. Still, I ended up going for the HP mainly because the preconfigured model I saw in the store (a dv6445us) was simply spectacular for the price. I picked it up for $850 USD and I consider it a real bargain. I think that is one advantage that HP has over Dell...the preconfigured store models that they sell. If you're willing to shop around sometimes you can get a great deal on that type of notebook.

My honest advice would be to try and get a feel for the kind of specs you need in your notebook, then just price check between the two. I'd think of myself as a total HP fanboy but I wouldn't be above buying a Dell. Dell makes some great office computers but I think HP really has them beat on the multimedia notebook which is really the sort of notebook that I prefer (and coincidently, is the kind of notebook the dv6000z is)

Count me amongst those who have yet to have a hardware problem with my HP DV9500t. I realize it is rather new, but I have put it through some long paces so far though. I am a little disappointed in the video card, the WEI and the resultant game play which is consistent with the WEI. I'm sure it has a lot to do with HP's decision to use a "econo" Nvidia card, and then further hamstringing by underclocking and sharing memory. But other than that, it's fine.
