Is there a way to hook up my 5.1 z5500 speakers to my dv9500 without buying a usb audio card or anything like that. I wouldn't mind getting a cable or adapter, but I'd rather not shell out $70 for a decent 5.1 audio card.

You should be able to find the cable that mostly come with 3 out put, a friend of mine had to do the same thing. He got a 5.1 logitech set of speakers and he had to go to radioshack to get the cables. you can find them at radioshack or any other electronic store near you live.
