It seems like it's when it's very hot and I start doing a lot of I/O to the hard drive. Last night I was recording a tv program via the tuner and it happened. When you are even viewing a tv program, even when not saving or recording, it still spools to disk, so I'm thinking something related to the hard disc? Been thinking about replacing it anyway but wanted to see if anyone else has seen this happen.

What do you mean it "spools to disk"? If your drive is constantly running (reading/writing), it's possible you're low on system memory. Capturing live video is very CPU/RAM/HDD intensive. If you have a lot of programs/processes running in the background, it could eat up memory. Also, if you have a memory leak (apps not releasing memory when shut down), this too can kill available memory.

Your main problem is most likely your system is just overheating. Poor ventilation, bad heatsink contact, defective fans, etc... could cause this. I'd recommend sending the unit in for service to get it checked out. I don't recommend opening it yourself, you could damage the unit even further if you're unfamiliar opening notebooks.

    To reduce access to HDD:

    1. Try killing apps/processes running in the background

    2. Add more memory to the system. The more you have, the less it'll swap to the HDD.

I've heard several reports of this laptop shutting down. Its the Pentium 4 processor and a mediocre cooling system, its definatly overheating. Besides the advice Venombite gave, try getting a cooling pad to cool down your system.
