I'm getting a grinding noise when I power up. Seems to be getting worse. Also, my dvd drive opens up for no reason sometimes. One more thing eg., to the right of touch pad gets very hot. Are[?] these items typical? This my 1st notebook which we're using as desktop replacement. Other than those items, I couldn't be happier with this notebook.

That grinding noise and your drive opening for no reason is not typical, I would be downright frightened by that!
I think you'd better send it in for repair. -
I agree the grinding is not normal, that will be covered. As far as your right hand getting hot...that's normal for the zd8000 and x6000, the Prescott P4 in these laptops run about 55 degrees C (on average). The grinding noise is prolly a fan. Or it might be a problem with your CD rom drive.

Yes, laptops like that using desktop processors will generate quite a bit of heat, that is normal and to be expected, but the grinding noise is not. You'd better get that checked out pretty quickly.

The grinding noise is coming from upper right hand area of keyboard. Upon doing some searching of these forums I saw that fan noise coming from that area is not unusual. While, a grinding fan cannot be good, I am concerned that by opening the back of the notebook I'd void a warranty if I was to try and observe the fan on start up. Anybody here ever opened the back on a notebook before? Prolly a silly question for notebook vets, but I am a newby for notebooks.
As for the DVD opening up, I think I may have touched the slot by mistake. -
Your machine is under warranty for one year parts and labor. If you have a bent, weak or improperly installed fan, I would let HP fix or replace it. That way you know you won't have problems with that fan in the future. If you open your Lappy your warranty is gone, what if something serious happens then, your stuck with 12lbs $1800 weight!

Thanks for the input everyone. I guess I should let HP handle it but being w/o is a major pain in the caboose. Oh well...
