Still waiting for the ze2000z notebook to come along but i'm thinking I want to get rid of the 4200RPM hard drive it's comming with. 4200 seems pretty slow to me. I had a couple questions regarding this:

    - Can the Hard Drive even be replaced in the ze2000z series?

    - If so, any recommendations on hard drives and sellers? I can buy online.

    - Are there any tutorials on doing this? I'm very willing to learn.

I've built plenty of Desktop PC's in my life but i'm guessing that tinkering with a laptop is a completely different game. Not sure if this is relevant or not but i'll post the specs of the laptop anyway:

    - OS: XP Pro
    - Processor: AMD Turion 64 ML-32 (1.8GHz/512KB L2 Cache)
    - Display: 15.0" TFT XGA BrightView (1024x768)
    - Graphics Card: ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M
    - Memory: 512MB DDR SDRAM (1x512MB)
    - Hard Drive: 40 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
    - Primary CD/DVD Drive: DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
    - Networking: 54g 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster
    - Primary Battery: 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Productivity Software: Microsoft Works/Money

    Thanks for the help guys.

    Yes
Hitachi 7k100 offers desktop like performance. The 60GB goes around $130 on ZipZoomFly. You can get a 60GB 5400RPM drive for about $100. To me the extra money is well spent although the 7k100s do run a little warmer.
If you can get a copy of the service manual for the ze2000z, which should be on HP's website, hard drive replacement should be covered there. Good Luck.

I agree that the Hitachi 7k60 is your best bet. The prices are much lower than the used to be.

HP has great online documentation, just search for your model on HP's support site, then you can find how to access and replace the hard drive. It's very easy to do, only takes about five or ten minutes.

    1. get 256MB ram and buy something... 1GB or 512 MB from other sellers. HP charge WAY too much for the memory.
u can get 256MB (included in base price) plus a 512 MB at around 50$ more VS u pay the base price + 75$ just to get a 512 MB
    2. u can get more battery life by ordering a 12 cells battery instead of a 6 cells (if u can accept the fact that it sticks out a little bit at the bottom and a little heavy) GOod things about it is that u get more battery life and it (really) helps circulating the air under your notebook.
    3. If you're planning to buy this at HP.com and u are a costco member....maybe you should consider buying it from costo.com? you can customize this notebook just like at HP.com but you will get a full 6 months return period VS HP's 1 month........ think about it
