Crucial list a 200 pin RAM module #CT700986 for the laptop. Opening up the RAM access cover I see what looks like a 144 pin socket. The keyway on the socket is on the right one pin from end. Not a 144 pin socket. Is there a adapter missing? This is a older compaq re-branded hp.

    Service manual ( http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00246219.pdf)
    says it uses SDRAM SODIMMs.

"Up to 1 GB (1024 MB) SDRAM using 512-MB modules. At least 128 MB SDRAM
    preinstalled."

    CT700986 is DDR, 333MHz, PC2700.

In this case I would trust the manufacturer's service manual more.
