I have a 4610 that I have been happy with except for one issue. It seems that whatever I plug into the PCMCIA slot causes the computer to hard freeze unless I am plugged into A/C power. This has occurred with two different D-Link wireless cards and with a Linksys USB wireless adapter plugged into a USB 2.0 card. Interestingly, the USB wireless works fine plugged into the regular USB 1.0 ports.

HP has been working with me to solve the problem and I have sent the computer back to them twice. First they said I had added incompatable memory which they removed but the computer still froze when I got it back. Second time they re-imaged my hard drive and still the computer froze when I got it back.

HP says they have never seen this issue before and are now going to replace the computer with a new one of the same model.

I saw one other person on a D-Link forum mention the same problem but I wondered if anyone else has had problems similar to this? Maybe it is just my particular motherboard or PCMCIA slot?

    Hey Boat,

I remember reading something like this a while back. I did a search and I noticed that it was you that was having the problems.

It probably comes down to the amount of power the PCMCIA slots provide. Your cards probably draw too much power for them to work properly. The PCMCIA slots are now usually 3.3V, it's possible the cards you have are 5V cards.

I think the problem is the the PCMCIA slot on that computer. I sent it back to HP twice for repair and both times it was returned with the same problem. Finally, I think they got sick of dealing with me, and sent me a new computer. They sent a different model with built in wifi so I'm a happy camper.

I have this problem, too! I have the ze4610. I bought the D-Link dwl-g650 pcmcia wifi card. I had lots of problems, like the computer locking. Finally, I tried a Linksys pcmcia wi fi card. That worked somewhat but also has locking problems. So I am sure the problem has to do with the ze4610 and not the pcmcai wifi cards.
