I have made my final decission and I am going to purchase the zt3000. My only questions is should I be purchasing an extended service plan(s)? Are they really necessary and are there any basica service plans that come with the laptop when I purchase it? Thanks ahead of time.

I say YES, get the extended warranty plan & upgrade to 3 years. You don't have to get the Accidental Coverage unless you're very accident prone [ ;)] but at least the 3 year.
The Standard warranty on the ZT3000 is 1 year parts & labor mail-in/depot World-Wide warranty. If you're in a country that services HP's, then you'd have to ship or drop off the unit and pickup or they'll ship back to you when it's done. You can get the on-site warranty so they come to your door to fix if busted.
The 3 year warranty I got for my Toshiba was a great investment even though I never really had to use it. My friend who also got a similar unit with the extended (because I recommended it) needed this extended warranty a number of times, including a systemboard replacement. This repair would have cost $300+ dollars, so this one repair cover the cost of the extended warranty.
You don't have to make the decision now, for HP, you should have upto 11 months from date you receive the unit to buy the extended warranty, but just verify with HP incase they changed their policy.

blachole, I've mentioned about my experiences(mostly problems) with ZT3000 that I purchased 2 weeks ago in "HP/compaq Propularity growing" topic. I don't want to confuse your purchase decision, I is just my experience with this one, and I will change it with another ZT3000 anyway. I also mentioned about some accidents that have happened to my toshiba laptop in the past. So according to those accident experiences I decided to buy one year extended and accidental protect warranty. I would recommend it, you would never know what is going to happen! and eventually you are buying a risk of losing average $400 with paying $100 for a year. Decision is up to you! Since laptops are mobile devices, chances are that you'll carry it and use it different locations and accidents may happen. good luck with your new laptop. I hope you will be luckier than me!
