I want to extract data off of the semi-broken hard drive in my zv5000.

The machine won't boot so I got a new drive under warrenty but I want to attempt to salvage some of the data off of the drive. I thought I could get a 2.0" IDE -> USB adapter but found out that the drives used by this model use some non-standard connector.

Is anyone familiar with the connector I'm talking about and if so, knows what type it is and where I could get some sort of converter to a standard IDE cable?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Pull the adaptor off the drive and you'll see the standard 2.5" HD connector.

You could maybe buy an enclosure and put the hard drive into it and make an external USB hard drive out of it.

Awesome! I didn't even think to try and take that front adapter thing off. Funny thing is I went and actually bought a USB enclosure and was all set to go but saw the weird connector and just gave up and returned it.

Should have asked this question first!

Pulled the adapter off, plugged it into the 2.5" USB adapter and grabbed all the data of the drive. Just after I finished copying all the data it ground to a halt and wouldn't spin up at all.

I can't get much luckier than that! Sent the thing back to HP, returned the USB adapter to Fry's and this whole episode didn't cost me a dime, just a very worried wife who was very grateful to get all her data back.

Lucky indeed. My HD went and I also tried to mount it on an Addonics PCMCIA external pocket drive case that I had and it wouldn't even spin up. Fortunetly I backed up all my files onto an external HD days earlier. Lost maybe half a dozen files only that I've created afterwards.

Bummer was that my 3 year extended warranty with HP expired less than a month before that:-(
